Description
Harvey's is the oldest independent Brewery in Sussex. Founded by John Harvey in 1790 it still remains a privately owned family business, with the eighth generation currently working there. We pride ourselves on the craft of our brewing, environmental credentials, local distribution, local charitable activities and loyal staff. Widely known for our Best Bitter, our beers and pubs can be found in and around the South East. As a Regional Brewer we tend not distribute further than 60 miles from the brewery premises, however our beers can be purchased via our online shop shop.harveys.org.uk and at our Brewery Shop in Lewes. Cask, Queenโs Head Piccadilly. Amber, lasting off white head. Gentle bread, floral and caramel aroma. Supple slip from sweet and smooth to peppery, bitter and slightly funky. Complex but very drinkable.

Cask at The Cricketers Arms, Berwick. Unsure this should be a new rating given it is the old IPA with a new label, one that is more fitting and will probably give it a better score. Light, watery session ale that does the job before a cycle home. Reasonable caramel gold.

Cask at the John Harvey Tavern, Lewes, as the Armada Ale, Dry Hopped. Poured a clear dark amber colour with a round bubbly white head. The aroma is malt and yeast. The flavour is moderate to light sweet and bitter, with a smooth, rich, yeasty, caramel, malt, herbal, light woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

275ml bottle bought from the Offie, Leicester and drunk at home. Pours extremely dark brown, almost no head. Medicinal aroma, bitter cooking chocolate, yeast extract, raisins, balsamic vinegar. Sweet taste, some winey sourness. More bitter chocolate, salted caramel and liquorice on the finish. Oily body, zero carbonation. It's complex and perhaps I'm being unfair but I feel the vinegary/vinous notes don't gel with the rest of the beer.

Half-pint, gravicask, shared with Finn at The International Brewing & Cider Festival 2024. Crystal clear amber body, filmy layer, clingy lacing. Caramel-fruity nose, inviting. Balanced taste character of apricot, bread, yeasty fruitiness, and caramel malts. Drying close, fine bodied. Like it. (Manchester, 23.03.2024).

Half-pint, gravicask, shared with Finn at The International Brewing & Cider Festival 2024. Deep copper coloured body, low beige head, fair lacing. Inviting aromas with toasted malts with scent of caramel, lightly roasted. Fine balanced taste of caramel malts and dried fruits. Earthy malts to the ending, lightly roasted. Fine depth to it. Like it. (Manchester, 23.03.2024).
