Description
Steel City Brewing is a brewing company with a very new world outlook on life! Rather than buying our own brewery - with all the associated cost and hassle that entails - we have decided, initially at least, to become what's known in Europe as a "Cuckoo" brewery... We started off doing our first brews at The Brew Company, before capacity issues saw us move to Little Ale Cart, where we spent three years proving even the most Heath-Robinson brew kit can be used to make good beer! We then outgrew the kit moved to Toolmakers brewery, before moving again to Lost Industry in 2016.
When we started we were (and still are) huge fans of hops and there just weren't enough brewers in the UK using them, even though that sounds ridiculous in today's beer world. So, rather than moaning into our beer, we thought we'd do something about it and brew some of our own! Over time as the beer scene evolved, there was less need for our style of hoppy beers since everyone was brewing with them so we evolved too and widened our style portfolio.

Bottleshare at Leighton’s Stratoflat. Thanks to the CDA hound. Lightly hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate with light carbonation. Smooth malts with modestly tangy caramel. Bitterish citrus hops, trace of pine. Bitterness ramps up at finish and leads to a long bitter linger. Comes over as a bitter amber.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours cloudy deep reddish brown with a decent off-white. The nose is rich, juicy, papaya, dried mango, passion fruit, earthy roast, dried berry, cranberry and light jam. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, jammy fruits, rather bitter indeed, charred wood, some astringency, toasty and dank hoppage with a lingering bitter-dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Punchy and flavoursome CDA. Nice work.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Colin. Pours clear brown with a creamy tan head. Dusty cocoa in the nose, earth, leafy hops, pine. Light to medium sweet flavor with some minerals, bitter cocoa, earth, moderate roast. Light bodied with active carbonation. Dry finish, very bitter, a little astringent, some rindy citrus. So so.

Gravity cask at the Birmingham Beer Bash, 2015. Poured a hazy straw colour with a bubbly round head. The aroma is skunky malt, light zesty orange marmalade citrus. The flavour is light bitter with a stale malt, light citrus, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Not really that impressed with the beer and even less impressed with the politics :-)

Blue (?) swing top bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Hazy, orangey gold. Film and halo of white head. Light aroma of citrus zest. Spicy biscuit malts. Grapefruit pith. Some oily herb. Taste is zesty, oily bitter. Clean, juicy mouthfeel. Soft carbonation enhances the hop oiliness. Finishes long, fairly light, pithy, zesty bitter. Very quaffable. Could drink lots of this.

Bottle from Beer Central - thanks Lorna! It pours lightly hazy gold with a decent white head. The nose is juicy tangerine, pomello, lime zest, grass, pine needles and biscuity malt. The taste is crisp, big punchy bitterness upfront, grass, pine, grapefruit, zesty lemon, peppery and waxy citrus rind with a very long bitter-dry finish. Light- medium body and fine carbonation. I was expecting the bitterness to perhaps be too much, but it wasn’t for me anyway. Very quaffable.
