Description
Steel City Brewing is a brewing company with a very new world outlook on life! Rather than buying our own brewery - with all the associated cost and hassle that entails - we have decided, initially at least, to become what's known in Europe as a "Cuckoo" brewery... We started off doing our first brews at The Brew Company, before capacity issues saw us move to Little Ale Cart, where we spent three years proving even the most Heath-Robinson brew kit can be used to make good beer! We then outgrew the kit moved to Toolmakers brewery, before moving again to Lost Industry in 2016.

When we started we were (and still are) huge fans of hops and there just weren't enough brewers in the UK using them, even though that sounds ridiculous in today's beer world. So, rather than moaning into our beer, we thought we'd do something about it and brew some of our own! Over time as the beer scene evolved, there was less need for our style of hoppy beers since everyone was brewing with them so we evolved too and widened our style portfolio.

Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along This has a lovely warmth that you notice straight away, very indulgent beer. It pours very, very dark brown peeling away to a lighter brown at the edges with a thin rim of beige. Crikey this dangerously drinkable, some sweet liqourice, light creamy cappuccino, its really, really smooth and despite having a few months on this its aged incredibly well indeed. Loved this and another belter in a bottle! However it didn’t quite topple the CTZ from the top spot tonight. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Pours copper in colour with a few stray bubbles across the top. Quite thick in the mouth, touch syrupy. Quite a distinctive nose, not sure exactly what it is but I think that I would recall this again in another Sorachi Ace beer, possibly it is fruity but also a little weird, like Josticks, a sort of Hippie IPA if you like. My dad liked this one, but unusually for me, its a Steel City beer that wasn’t totally my thing, there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with it at all, but maybe as Gazza suggest these hops work very well in a dark beer which I totally agree with but for me it didn’t come across as succesful here in an IPA. Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Quite honoured to have a preliminary sampling of this beer which is just about to be served at a few pubs in Derbyshire and elsewhere over the coming days & weeks. As Gazza suggested this was a touch young yet, but it was keen and eager to impress. Touch of pithiness at end (grapefruit). I got some spent coffee grains, Gazza got chocolate covered coffee bean, he was spot on. There was some good bitterness and yet it wasn’t overly bitter, touch of fresh green hoppiness but I would imagine that any rough edges on this will continue to smooth out over time and this can only get better. Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Pours dark brown, in fact chestnut colour I suppose with a very light beige head. We pondered for quite some time on the nose, I sort of got old damp wood, probably with some alcohol having been present in it at some point. There was also talk of liqourice, but it wasn’t out & out liqourice more sweetened liqourice as in Allsorts with other sweetish aroma’s coming into play along with the liqourice. The hoppiness is present, but not overpowering in this mild, some citrus combined with a light fresh cobnut nuttiness. Touch of dark fruit sort of like sticky fig but this was only a bit part player in the overall scheme of things. Lovely beer, really impressed how the Sorachi Ace can work in a beer like a Mild which I understand that because of its subtlety is quite easy for a brewer to make a complete pigs ear of. Very good. Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Having just had the Steel City CTZ it could well have been a case of ’ after the Lord Mayors Show but despite not quite hitting the lofty heights of the CTZ this held its own pretty well. Pours gold with a slim white head. This is crisp and with a nice fruitiness in the mouth, a thoroughly decent drop, with some late citrussy pithiness coating the roof of the mouth. Can’t fault this although I did think that the nose was just a little shy and subdued which is not really something you would normally say about Gazza and Dave’s beers. Anyway whilst not quite in the same league as the CTZ which is the benchmark that everything is going to have to aim for tonight , this is still a most enjoyable beer. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5

Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Pours lemony gold with a white bubbly head, very good clarity. Gazza say’s hemp on the nose, I wouldn’t necessarily have picked that out but I’ll take his word for it. This is superbly crisp and for a bottled golden hoppy beer it really is a stunner, sometimes I think you strike gold with bottled beers and this is one where we have I reckon, I would have loved the opportunity to have had this from cask. Lovely citrus, really fresh, bitterness everywhere and yet not in the least bit harsh, it sort of zips about the mouth in a pinball fashion. Great beer! A7 A4 T9 P4 Ov17 4.1

Bottle consumed with Gazza and my dad 01.09.11, cheers Gazza for bringing this along Pours with a huge billowing white head that slowly settles down, it’s a sort of overipe lemony colour with a very slight haze. Quite soft mouthfeel, dryness soon becomes apparent. This is citrussy though with a nice level of sweetness coming through, nice beer. As Gazza said a pint of this on a nice day would go down a treat. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8
