Description
Based in the heart of Stockport for almost two centuries, and owning around 260 tenanted and managed pubs, inns and hotels across the North West, ‘Robinsons’ is one of oldest and most respected names in British brewing history.
Robinsons took over Hartleys brewery in 1982, closing down the Ulverston plant in 1994 and transferring the Hartley brands to the Unicorn brewery. Robinsons bought the rights to the Ward brands in 2006 but subsequently sold some of those brands to Maxim Beer Co.

Cask. Deep amber colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is floral and grassy hops with some mild ripe fruits and ryelike notes to it. Flavour is wooden, sweet dark ripe fruits as well as some resiny and mild herbal notes to it. Ends in a mellow bitterness.

Cask @ Commercial Inn, Sowerby Bridge. Clear golden with a creamy-frothy head. Its Citra hops are very noticeable, providing citric flavour without any real bitterness, and its aroma is similar.

Cask at Red Cow, Nantwich (not listed on RateBeer). Pours lemon yellow with a small white head and good lacing. There’s citrus and lemon in the aroma. Floral hops to the fore in the mouth, along with citrus, tropical truit and some mango and grapefruit. Some stickiness in the finish. This isn’t my sort of beer at all, but it isn’t bad – certainly better than I expected.

Cask at JDW The Goldengrove, Stratford (25/03/2023) - Much better than the last one, bright citrus fruity forward with some orange and grapefruit notes, sweet breast malts, soft cask carb and good condition, balanced bitter hoppy close. Nice one. --- Beer merged from original tick of Robinsons Citra Pale Ale on 26 Mar 2025 at 07:30 - Score: 6. [Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell at 3.4% ABV.] A straw coloured pour with a loose white head; lemony aroma; lemony taste with a grainy body; and a dry zesty finish. Quite tasty given the low ABV.

Bottle from Bottle Stop, Bramhall. Golden with a very small head. Hoppy and described on the bottle as zingy, which it is. Citrus with a sort of malty-bitterness.

Can (from KCM Pirkkala). Golden colour, mediumsized white foamy head. Aroma is citrus, some hay, grass and mild maizelike sweetness to it. Flavour is citrus, some crisp bready malts with mild biscuity tones too.

Aged sample Shortlived yellow head, fast reduced to rim over fully hazy foxy orange-amber beer. Oxydation in the nose, preserved oranges, sweet dessert wine, fusels. Oxydation less obvious if still present orally. Again preserved oranges, liqueurish with even a fine point of bitterness as in an orange liqueur or orangesauce with kumquats. Feels rather well-bodied, quite slick - again a liqueurish feel. Nice, even sophisticated despite its age and relative low ABV. Txs to Stef!
