So with a banjo burner, a bunch of industrial-sized kitchen pots and as many buckets as we could find, we jumped in feet first. Once a week, every week. Now, several years later and with a 15 barrel version of said banjo burner and kitchen pots for a brewhouse, we’re befuddling the beer judges and converting the masses. One pint at a time.
Our original brewing system has a long and sordid history befitting our line of beers. It centers on the second-to-last kettle ever built by noted coppersmith Fred Zaft, a handcrafted, solid copper 7-barrel brew kettle originally housed in a nineteenth century bar in San Francisco’s old Italian neighborhood. At one point, the bar had been totally restored to its past glory, replete with a “self-flushing spittoon” under the bar (yes, it was actually a urinal). Unfortunately, we were not able to get the self-flushing spittoon.
If you think our beers tend to cross various lineages, you’ll love tidbits like the fact that in 1951, our current building endured a freight train derailing and plowing into the building. We hope our beer can make that sort of impact on you.

Bottle. Agave, wheat malt, and straw aroma. Golden yellow with giant white head. Lightly sweet wheat malt, and mildly bitter agave/grass flavor. Okay body. A wheat ale - no less, no more.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 7/31/2017. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep golden/amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, pear, apple, honeydew melon, citrus peel, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus fruit/peels, fruity/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, pear, apple, honeydew melon, citrus peel, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy/citrus peel hop bitterness and peppery yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, pear, apple, honeydew melon, citrus peel, coriander, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus fruit/peels, fruity/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a good malt/bitter/spiciness balance. A bit of increasing bitter/spicy astringency, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is good. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.2%. Overall this is a very good fruited hoppy witbier style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus fruit/peels, fruity/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, despite the increasingly bitter/spicy/drying finish. A little weird at first, as I was not expecting the witbier yeast/spice profile; but it ends up working really well, with nice balance between all flavors. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle: Hazy gold with an off-white head. Wheat, lime, agave aroma. Taste is wheat malt, orange-lemon-lime.....a trace of banana...mild, sweet agave. Some grassy bitterness. A little vague-feeling in intent, but pretty tasty.

12oz bottle. Pretty solid offering as far as Agave beer goes. I remember this style having a small explosion in the late 90s, and it is interesting to revisit. Agave works rather well with the wheat. The Saaz are spicy and add some serious balance. Pretty good.

bottle - Pours black with a small tan head. It has a roasted malt and rich coffee aroma. The flavor is sweet up front with coffee and chocolate leading into a more bitter, dark roast finish. Medium to full body. Very tasty.

This is a 9.3% Belgian Style Golden Ale from Michigan that’s a nice looking opaque orange-amber with a thick light beige head of foam. The aroma is bready, honey, apricot and peaches - tasty. Full bodied with a raspy mouthfeel. The taste is thick malty sweet with toffee, bread pudding, caramel, apricot. It reminds me a bit of a barleywine or old ale. Really rich and a good beer for a cool fall evening.

T42 tasting on me Birfaday. Big thanks to Leighton. Very hazy amber beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Palate is smooth, mildly dry and has decent fine carbonation. Caramel - toffee malts, light creamy sweetness. Orange marmalade and mild hop spice. Soft dry finish. A bit malt forward and lacking any hop brightness, but it’s okay.
