Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.

We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Bottle from Sainsbury's and drunk at home. Clear pale brown colour lasting white head. Decent enough bitter. Certainly it seems British brewers are using more hops. Their presence is much more obvious. It has some malt, some distinctive white pepper hops on the finish. I thought very decent. Very drinikable.

Bottle from Waitrose. Clear chestnut/dark amber with a small off-white top. Malt aroma with hint of toffee. Flavour has more profile with light roasted malt, toffee, wild berries, pear, tingly grassy hops. Bittersweet and slightly rich for a best bitter. What it lacks in session quality it makes up for in flavour. I like it.
