Description
Ridgeway Brewing was established in 2002 by master brewer Peter Scholey (former head brewer at Brakspear) and his wife Vanda. The name comes from the ancient trade route that winds its way through English countryside between small towns. It has been around for thousands of years, adapting with the changing times, The reason why we chose the name Ridgeway, apart from living on it, was that we hope to create lasting experiences, believe in the long term and love the outdoors.

Bought by Crafty Brewing in February 2025.

Bottled. Amber color, small white head. Rough metallic light hoppy nose. Sweet malty, carbonated, mostly harsh. Even this is a bottle conditioned ale, it tastes more like a lager!

[Bottled at Old Eskil Ölkultur, Eskilstuna] Hazy golden, rocky head. Aroma of hay, vanilla and sulphur. Dryish with rounded mouthfeel and notes of citrus. Light herbal bitterness.

A red-brown beer with a brown head. The aroma is acidic malty from the roasted malt, but also with light notes of berries. The flavor is sweet malty with roasted notes, leading to a quite bitter end. But I find the body thin - even more so when the 8% ABV is taken into account.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, reddish mahogany with a small tan head. Unusual almost vinous aroma with distinct roasted malt. Fairly full body with sweet, malty accents. Subdued bitterness in the finish. Very pleasant indeed. 160806

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, fully golden with a small, off-white head. Fresh, citrusy nose. Very heavy carbonation. Medium body - extremely dry with citrusy - almost medicinal - accents. Rather hoppy finish. Not really harmonious on my palate. 160806

A decent stout, kind of a chocolate porter/ stout blend with a shot of brandy added to warm you up. Black with some sediment, thick but short head. Thick and full bodied, the alcohol is apparent in the aroma and flavor. Lightly sweet malt, fairly bitter with the coffee and chocolate.

16.9 oz bottle - Pours clear and brown with a thin head. The aroma is almost non-existent. I let it warm for a little while hoping it would bring out more flavor and aroma, but it didn’t. The flavor is a typical brown ale sweetness with lightly roasted malts and not much else. The palate is thin and lightly carbonated, and the finish is somewhat dry. This makes an okay session beer, but that’s it. There’s little to recommend it. I thought maybe the bottle being around since last winter was perhaps too long for this one, but I see earlier reviewers have similar opinions. Bafflingly up until last week the local World Market wanted six bucks a bottle for this beer. I’m glad I at least waited until they cut it to three.

500ml bottle from Tesco. Gold/copper colour with lasting white head. Sweet hop with grapefruit and peardrop fruit. Bit dusty. Has some juicy malt in mouth. Very good hop on end. Just a tad earthy and muddy which I guess is the danger with some bottle conditioned UK beers. Otherwise very nice.
