The second batch of Schouwveger, a stout by Vissenberg; still the same general profile and ABV as the first batch, but apparently the brewers tinkered with the recipe somewhat, or at least enough to grant this new version the status of being a separate beer. Thick and frothy, egg-white, pillowy, stable head, lightly hazy, deep copper-hued ruddy bronze robe – not the black I expected from anything presenting itself as a stout of any kind. Aroma of melting brown sugar, cooked apple, stewed pear, ripe banana, honey, caramel sauce, cloves, apricot jam, brown bread, prunes. Sweet, candied figs, ripe pear and banana, medium carbonation but smooth mouthfeel nonetheless, sweet caramelly malt body with honeyish residual sugariness on top, floral hop touch but hardly any ‘end bitterness’, let alone of roasted grains; a strong, ‘jenever’-like alcohol effect dominates the finish. I will not even begin to judge this as an imperial stout – this is as much an imperial stout as Kasteelbier, and the second ‘fake’ one I had that evening (the other being Koolputter Zwart – clearly the ‘ordinary’ Belgian brewer still has no clue what this style is); heck, it seems as if Vissenberg is even further away from any kind of stout than the first version was, with even less roastedness. Judged as a quadrupel, which seems a much more accurate style qualification, this is still rather crude, too sweet and too boozy.

Bottle shared by Inoven. Unclear a bit murky orange color, medium sized white to off-white head. Aroma is a bit sweet hoppy, flavor is somewhat tart en malt bitters with hop bitters. Tart clearly though. Like fruitpeel. Meh. Don't like it. 6-2-5-3-9.

Flesje gedeeld door Inoven, geprobeerd met Benzai. Het is een oranje tot amberkleurig bier met stevig beige schuim. Het heeft een fruitig en hoppig aroma, beetje metaalachtig. De smaak is moutig en hoppig.

Flesje gedeeld met Benzai en Tomhendriksen. Oranje tot amberkleurig bier met stevig schuim. Aroma fruitig, hop Smaak van hop en mout. Nasmaak is iets bitter.

Fles gedeelt door Benzai. Het is een donkerbruin bier met een medium schuimkraag. Aroma van zoethout en salmiak. De smaak is van karamel, drop / salmiak en gebrande mout. De smaak van salmiak blijft even hangen.

Fles gedeelt met Benzai. Het is een roodbruin bier met een medium schuimkraag. Het heeft een zoethout achtige geur. De smaak is gebrande mout, caramel, en drop.

Bottle shared by TomHendriksen. Dark red to red-brown color, medium sized off-white to beige head. Aroma is malts, lightly sweetish liquorice wood. Taste malts, sweet, candy sugar, slight caramel notes, slight bitter finish with a touch of alcohol. Definitely a BSA instead of a RIS btw.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een donkerbruin bier met stevig bruin schuim. Het heeft een fruitig en moutig aroma. De smaak heeft duidelijk gebrande granen en caramel.

Bottle at Craig's. Some gush on this one! It pours deep ruby - brown with a medium off-white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, roasted malt, perfumed, dried fruits, toasted coconut and rocky road. The taste is slick, sweet, sticky, oily, bit musty, boozy alcohol warmth, peppery spice and dried fruits. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not a huge amount to it really. Fine enough.
