Upright Brew Works, NYC tap (over-priced): Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma is at first very citrusy and you barely get the roast in there over its heavy presence. Taste is quite citrusy and resi with the malts taking a back seat. I felt the body was a little too light. That said, this was nice.

650 ml bottle. Pours amber with moderate head. Aromas of bread dough, rubber, and tropical fuit. Flavors are similar with additional pine and resin. Thick and chewy.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a voluminous, long-lingering tan head. Aroma brings loads of roasted malt, a touch of caramel in there, some cocoa, and of course hops. Flavour brings out loads of caramelized roasted malt, cocoa, and fairly prominent piney hops. The hops, however, are quite a bit outdone by the caramel and roasted malt - they are still obviously there, but they're a tad too far back, I'd say. The sweetness from the malts become more and more apparent with each sip, making this a bit of a cloying black IPA. It's got a bit of cough syrup on the finish. Decent, but off-putting.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance has a copper/bronze colored body, half finger white foamy head slowly dies within a half minute, nice sticky spider web lacing clings tightly to the pint glass. The aroma has the pine/citrus hops up front, slight maltiness comes forward as the beer warms. The taste is bittersweet just as an AIPA should be, pine/citrus hops begin bitter and gradually allow the malts to intricate themselves within the flavoring, nice bitter piney aftertaste; dry sticky finish. On the palate, its about a light to medium, fairly sessionable, carbonation is spot on for the style and for me as the sharpness is there but there is an aspect of smoothness that is more than enjoyable, big wow from me. Overall, AIPA - outa the park Schmaltz, holey moley, I can’t believe I had to move to Alaska to find this, I most certainly would have this again

The appearance is a dark brown colored body with a half finger white foamy head that dies in about a minute, lacing is clingy and in rings coating the glass nicely. The smell has some molasses, nutty malts, dark fruits all coming through in a fruity and somewhat roasty chocolate-like way. The taste is mainly sweet through the dark fruits, molasses, nuts and chocolate, fruity yet chocolatey aftertaste, dry nutty and fruity finish. On the palate is about a light to medium, somewhat sessionable. Carbonation is very smooth for an American Brown Ale, really just plain smooth all around in the mouth and on the tongue. Overall, this is not a bad American Brown Ale, would I have this again? Actually unsure if I would have this again, it kinda reminded me of Right Brain’s brown ale (Igor Takes A Digger) the way the dark fruits come through.

Bottle: Pours dark, nearly black...tall, tan head. Grapefruit peel, licorice, pine/resin aroma. Rich cocoa bitter...citrus...peel and pine. Coffee roast, ash. Very nice, complex and full bittering.

tap - Pours very dark amber, nearly black, with a small tan head. The aroma is of alcohol, roast, and a little dark fruit. It’s very sweet with obvious alcohol tones and some roasted chocolate with a touch of dark fruit. This one is just so sweet. Syrupy. It’s good but I think I’ve liked some of the earlier in the series more. Maybe at such a huge abv it’s time they changed things up a bit, maybe go more for a huge stout or barley wine instead of simply getting sweeter and sweeter.

650 ml bottle. Pour dark brown with moderate head. Rich caramel toffee aroma with roasted malts and cotton candy. Flavors of dark brown sugar, heavily roasted malts, a melange of hops (but not overly bitter), and chicory. More like a thick barley wine. Alcohol is present but nothing like what I expected 17% would bring to the party. Great stuff.
