Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.

Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Dark brown, small head. Aroma of coffee, dark bread and treacle. Mid sweet with full body and dense, rounded mouthfeel. Dark bread and caramellized sugar. Low bitterness. A very malty, warming beer. Perfect by the fireside in Scandinavian mid November damp- and darkness.

English: Olfactive dominated by molasses with black fruit accents and some spices. A collar of mocha foam lingers on a brown liquid with ruby reflections, rather clear and with a good effervescence. Molasses and black fruits grab the mouth, supported by a spicy and enveloping alcohol. With little bitterness, this beer is concentrated mainly in black fruit sugars, supported by a lively effervescence, all in a moderately light body.

Bottle at home in Hackney - I think picked up from some online shop years ago. BBE February 2014, drank in September 2020. Pours clear, deep brown with a frothy, off-white head. Rich and malty, moderately sweet, with some grape notes, toasted caramel, modest oxidation. Medium bodied with delicate carbonation. Semi-sweet finish, a little earthy dryness, toasted brown bread, dried toffee, aged berries. Pretty drinkable overall.

Very dark red, clear ale with a nice thick head. Smells of malt, dried fruit and a touch of caramel. The fruit I. The flavour is a little tarter bit there's a mix of fruit in there along with a heap of malt and a little caramel again. Rich and smooth, this is a nice strong ale.
