Description

West Coast style IPA by this extremely prolific Limburgian craft brewery, can from Drinks4U in Deinze, consumed three days before its expiration date. Slow gusher; foamy, very thick and rocky (hops-enhanced), pale greyish off-white, cobweb-lacing, firm head over a cloudy 'dirty' burnt orange robe with darkish ochre tinge. Aroma of orange peel, pomelo, lychee, wet bricks and gravel, toasted onion, pear, roasted shallots, white pepper, fried root parsley, old bread crust, great yellow gentian roots, some wet cardboard. Dryish yet yeasty onset, notes of persimmon, green olive-like umami, roasted pumpkin and fried carrot, spritzy carb, bready middle with a bread crust-like maltiness reinforced by bready yeastiness (which should not be present in this kind of beer) and bittered by a long, rooty, peppery, wormwoody, tonic water-like hoppiness with retronasal notes of dried grapefruit peel and dried southernwood; pronounced bready yeastiness persists, carrying the bitterness even further but also lending the finish a somewhat 'dirty' aspect. Boldly bitter old school IPA but more a Belgian IPA than a true West Coast IPA - perhaps because it should have been consumed younger than I did; still a very tasty beer, though, HopHemel rarely disappoints.

No head to speak of; muddy orangey-brown beer. Cold coffee, coffeepowder, maybe some roasted malt. Again coffee with some faintly salty touches and a retronasal whiff of halogen. In the aftertase, maybe some water-welled raisins, and some cigarette ash. Alcoholheat, short of alcohol-induced flavour. Not very carbonated. Wanting, although it must be a feat to extract so little flavour from such a strong beer. This isn't a Barley Wine in any way.

Panda at home, thanks to Kenneth, 24/08/2025.
Clear rich amber topped with an off white cap that escapes to the edge and a thin swirl.
Nose is stewed fruits, herb, toasted grains, dates, toffee.
Taste comprises fruit cake mix, spice, herb, grains, caramel, toasted sugars, candied fruit rinds.
Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a mellow boost.
Passable sipper ... lacks depth of flavour and barrel presence.

Can from Hopduvel.
A: clear dark amber, small, foamy, off-white head.
A: coffee bean, raisin, red apple peel, dried fig, hazelnut, almond.
T: sweetish raisin & fig, bitter coffee bean, nuts, toast.
F: bitter earthy hops, nuts, coffee, dried fruits, some vodka-like alcohol.
P: medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation.
Good, a bit thin for the style, ABV and coffee element (which is quite powerful here); but have an extra point for the attempt at something new.
