Description
VAUX has been a beloved name in Sunderland for almost 200 years. From the earliest incarnation of 'C. Vaux & Sons' in 1837 right through to the 1990's, the brewery was an important part of city life in Sunderland until its closure in 1999.
In early 2019, we set about relaunching this iconic brand to make it a source of pride once more for the people of Sunderland. One year on, after a successful period of contract brewing with some of the best breweries in our area, we have now opened our own brewery in Monk Street, Sunderland.

Can from HoTM. It pours oily dark brown/black with a tan head which eventually dissipates. The aroma is rich roasted malt, chewy, toothy, umami, big ol' hit of liquorice, bitter dark chocolate, rich dark roast, dried and dark fruits, fruit cake, plum pudding and some jammy berry. The taste is slick, oily, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, toasty, chewy, slightly charred, toothy, umami, liquorice, pretty fruity, plum, date, prune, jammy blueberry, fig jam, some warming alcohol, touch of spice and light tannin with a slick, roasty finish. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and slick mouth feel. Flavour with some good fruitiness. Enjoyable.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - murky red with an orange tinge. Big fluffy that disappears in a fizz after about 5 minutes. Nose - the cranberry completely dominates the pineapple and peach which you really have to look for. It's funky with sour edge. Taste - sour and funky cranberry with just a little peach or pineapple sweetness coming through underneath. Palate - close to medium bodied, tangy sour middle and finish. Overall - ok.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque brown to black. Thin creamy off-white head. Nose - dark chocolate, light molasses and just a hint of salt and smoke. An edge of caramel. Taste - rich honey, caramel, raisins and dark chocolate. Palate - medium bodied, sweet middle and finish. Overall - would've liked a bit of roast on this to give it more structure.
