Description
VAUX has been a beloved name in Sunderland for almost 200 years. From the earliest incarnation of 'C. Vaux & Sons' in 1837 right through to the 1990's, the brewery was an important part of city life in Sunderland until its closure in 1999.

In early 2019, we set about relaunching this iconic brand to make it a source of pride once more for the people of Sunderland. One year on, after a successful period of contract brewing with some of the best breweries in our area, we have now opened our own brewery in Monk Street, Sunderland.

Keg draught at BeerheadZ Nottingham. Mid- to dark brown, a swirl of beige/tan head. Salted caramel, bready Pretzel, a little bit of rubber. Sweet taste, loads more caramel and a little treacle. Some bitter notes on the finish with soft stone fruit. Light body for an imperial stout but some soft carbonation lifts it up.

440ml can. Slightly hazy orange, white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, caramel. Taste is the same, piney, grapefruit, orange, with some sweet caramel/toffee malt and grains, bitter hop finish with some light earthy notes. It's old school in a sort of nostalgic way. As jmgreenuk said; a bit simple by today's standards but actually pretty enjoyable.

440ml can from the Phantom taproom. Poured a mostly clear golden colour with a lasting frothy white head and a few bubbles. The aroma is grainy malt, light toffee caramel. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a crisp, fresh, malt, light toffee, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. A rather simple IPA by today’s standards but very tasty and moreish.

Can split at L6, thanks to Fergus, 02/03/23. Light black with a tan cap that thins to the edge. Nose is chocolate, light smoke, dark malts, brown sugar sprinkle, toffee, dried fruit rinds. Taste comprises burnt toffee, earthy fruit rinds, charr, mellow roast, cocoa powder. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced spike of alcohol. Okay easy sipper but lacking depth ... simply sticking Old Chimneys in the name doesn't make for a great.

Can shared in CW - cheers to Fergus. Pours clear black-brown with a foamy, beige head. Medium-big sweet flavour, some ash, smoked meat, cocoa, roast, raisins, earth. Full bodied, lightly oily, with fine carbonation. Moderate warmth to finish, more smoked meat, a little candied ham, rounded roast, bit of boozy warmth, mild bitter ash. Solid.
