Description
VAUX has been a beloved name in Sunderland for almost 200 years. From the earliest incarnation of 'C. Vaux & Sons' in 1837 right through to the 1990's, the brewery was an important part of city life in Sunderland until its closure in 1999.

In early 2019, we set about relaunching this iconic brand to make it a source of pride once more for the people of Sunderland. One year on, after a successful period of contract brewing with some of the best breweries in our area, we have now opened our own brewery in Monk Street, Sunderland.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Cambridge Wine Merchants. Pours black-brown with a modest, creamy khaki head. Lightly sweet with restrained roast, rounded dark malts, smooth chocolate notes, nips of tangy raisins and earthy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Nicely balanced finish, more rich and rounded dark malt character, subtle dark fruits, cocoa, a little earth and ash. This one was a real grower. Solid.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Cambridge Wines. Pours cloudy gold with a frothy, pure white head. Lightly sweet with ample grainy pale malt character, nips of peach and tangerine, some flinty dryness, an odd clingy mouthfeel. Light bodied with lively, massaging carbonation. Finishes with more soft citrus notes, a little white grape, low bitterness. Interesting at points but nothing special overall.

Can at Candid, Stafford. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small white head. It has a sort of nutty aroma about it. In the mouth it has a syrupy texture, with flavour of treacle mixed with dark fruits, toffee and caramel. A hint of sugary sweetness too. A nice solid brown ale.
