Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle at Craig’s. It pours cloudy golden with minimal head. The nose is earthy, doughy, light spice, toast, grain, mild pear/apple and faint candy. The taste is crisp, tart fruits, dough, toast, spice, hay, straw and light alcohol warmth with a lingering dry, warming finish. Medium+ body and fine prickly carbonation. Tasty enough, not quite enough depth for me, but not bad.

The newest trappist brand and the first outside of Europe (where it is still only ’accidentally’ available thanks to isolated efforts of beer afficionados; rumour has it that a very limited export chain to Europe will start in 2015). Apparently the result of visits of the monks to every European trappist brewery and brewed with American malts and hops but Belgian yeast, although I have no proof to establish that claim. Stable, snowy white, thinnish, sticky head, colour peachy blonde, misty with a milky cloudiness after adding the yeast; aroma of citrussy and perhaps grassy, American hops, mango, apricot, hazelnuts, some smokiness but also a weird smell of burnt sulphur or matches, probably due to yeast autolysis, as in a very old geuze; taste fruity, citrussy and peachy, hints of pineapple with a sharp and mineral-like carbonisation, soft and supple maltiness, a bit cheesy, aftertaste yeasty with characteristically American hop bitterness, in a mild and aromatic, citrussy way, medium long.

On draft @ AleHouse Amesbury, MA. Pours and cloudy golden orange type color with lasting head retention. Aroma is all yeast byproduct! Clove, banana and fruity hints.

Flavor is yeast dominant and follows the aroma. Clove, peaches, banana and dusty yeast. Is is a lot of banana for a "Belgian" ale. Yeah, maybe so but I like what is going on here, when it got warm I also got a spicy hint from the yeast with some candy sugar I didn’t find when it was cold. The body is lacking slightly but really the base beer is like a Trappist/ hefeweizen hybrid. I like what this brewery was going for and hope they continue to create some exciting new brews to add to their lineup. Worth a try for sure and I could drink this again if offered.

Bottle shared by Vance at Ale Alpharetta. Pours a hazy yellow, with a bubbly white head. The aroma is immediately fruity esters, with notes of mango and white grapes, and some cloves and white bread. The flavor is sweet and vinous, with a light tartness. Surprisingly light body, creamy, and effervescent. Overall, this is an excellent beer, with a nice, fruity aroma, and a clean, refreshing, and very drinkable body.

Bottle shared tonight by Joel, thanks for the opportunity! Fairly clear light golden color with a decent off white head. Aromas of yeast, bread, lightly sweet sugar, clove and pepper with hints of light fruit. The flavor follows the aroma, lightly sweet fruit and honey like malty sweetness offset with some spice and pepper. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet light syrupy mouthfeel. I liked this beer, I’m glad I got to try it. The price point is horrible, I would never buy this for myself, I’m glad someone else shared this with me.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with a large off-white head that dissipates slowly with good lacing. Aroma is light overall, with notes of pepper, yeast, fruitiness (banana?), grass. Flavor is light sweet, peppery, fruity, light zesty bitter. Light body, high carbonation. Decent enough!
