(draught) Slightly hazy (chill haze?) red-chestnut; very slim, yellowish head. Soapy nose; touch of vanilla & raspberry. Taste is perfumed: vanilla, lime peel (kafir lime), strawberry; served way too cold. Medium bodied. Very perfumed - but that's not what a Bock's about. Even a hint of phenolic-benzene.

(draught) Yellow-gold. White firm head, lacy. Nose with pale malts, bit of full-grain cookies, ever so slight hops. Sweetish, very malty taste. Very tiny touch of roasted malt in the palate. Light to medium bodied. Neutral, ever so slight end-bitterness. Uninteresting, nothing fundamentally wrong.

An above average American Wheat. Light fruit in aroma with maybe peach and banana. Zesty wheaty flavor with light banana, otherwise clean palate. Lighty dry finish. Pale gold color, no head. Its zestiness and mild ester presence make it worthwhile for an otherwise uninspiring style.

Cloudy gold with small head. Light malty aroma, a little buttery. A bit too heavy and sweet, esp for style. Too much aftertaste...lacking in that refreshing zest and light drinkability. A little too hoppy (bitter) in the finish, except that it needs some bitterness to balance the corny sweetness. Comes across almost like a wheaty Kolsch, but thats really stretching for a descriptor. Final note: it took me a while to get through this, and as it warmed, it became noxiously sweet while simultaneously losing its carbonation - finished like a poorly done continental lager.

Nice red color with small haed. Nice orangey and melanoidin aroma. Toffee and melanoidin flavors. Light nearly empty finish! A little tart.

2002 (bottle): (numbers up) - Deep garnet color, small dense fading head. Rich doughy choclolate and cinnamon aroma. Chocolatey buttery sweet toasty flavor, almost bocklike. Balanced finish. Nice. 2001 tasting (draft): Malty and zingy, with warming cinnamonish notes. Is it spiced? I don't think so, but its got something unusual going on. I had this at a place that uses nitro to push all their beers, I don't know if this is also nitrogenated, but it had some dissolved nitro in it and it was extremely creamy, with an almost warm-milk aroma. I don't know if thats an intended part of the flavor profile, but it was interesting.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. Pretty color but not much going on in the flavor. I found it neither malty nor hoppy. It was not as good as their Christmas seasonal.

Update 2002: I don't get the wet dog notes this time, just cooked vegetables. Pours a dark ruby brown with a short light head. Earthy cheesy hops with vegetal notes in aroma. A hint of chocolate and nutmeg. Light chocolatey sweet notes with earthy bitterness and more cooked vegetable off notes. Almost sticky mouthfeel. Promising, but flawed. 2001: A deep dark red color, with a solid yet quickly dissipating head. A very malty nose, but oddly, with strong notes of wet dog! Actually its not awful smelling, but there's definitely something wrong here. Unusual malty flavor, but still doggie. Fairly smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Tastes like no other beer I've had, and I'm undecided about how much I like or dislike it. Its at least passable. At best its a balanced yet boring amber ale.

Thick foamy head, dark gold, almost cloudy. Excellent heavy lacing. Crisp lemony hop aroma. Well-balanced, with nice sweet clean malt profile. Med hoppiness in flavor, with light bitterness. Very drinkable but on the whole unremarkable.

Original 3.0 rate below. Updating this for 2020. Its not that its particularly great, but maybe I had that amber ale bias before, only scoring the high grav beers big. In a way, maybe amber ales are the pale lagers of the ale world - hard to be impressed by them. But at this stage in my beer geekdom, I'm fairly impressed with this very balanced and easy to drink amber ale, just a nice breadiness in the malts, good leafy hops. Def worth than the 3.0. Orignal: Nice amber color, with a light head. Sweetish earthy aroma, with light caramel notes. Sweet almost cloying flavor, with more herbal/earthy notes.
