Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 7/11/2016. Near black in colour with a moderately sized, off-white, head. Aroma of plain chocolate, roasted malts and leafy hops. Flavour had more chocolate, coffee beans and toasty malts leading to a dryish finish. Good.

Keg tap at the Old Bicycle Shop. Purplish chocolate brown, opaque. No head or visible carbonation. Odd for keg. Marmite, dark chocolate, a hit of funk. Tastes quite sour - and I’d be surprised if this is off as it’s new here. I like a dry stout to have a slight soured note but this is too much, although I get used to it over time. Overripe blueberry and strong yeast in the finish. A bit of carbonation tickles the lips and lifts the body. Some will like it more than me, but I’m not keen.

Keg tap at the Old Bicycle Shop, Cambridge. Slight haze in the golden yellow, well-carbonated, with a small film of white head. Not a lot of scent. Some fresh lemon and some plasticy adjunct but not terrible, just average. Taste is nicer, some sweet citrussy notes piping up before the bitter astringent finish. Yeah, not all that.

Keg tap at the Old Bicycle Shop, Cambridge. Dark brown, almost black. Opaque. Mild sweet smell with some banana, raisins and a hint of funk. Taste is sweet, fruity and roasty, with a less balanced finish. Called a ’dark wheat’ but I’m struggling with the wheat aspect of it at all... Drinkable and slightly above average but not my favourite of Cambridge brews.

Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival at KEGS. Cask. Opaque black - brown beer, small pale tan head. Big nose on this one - foam banana sweets! Palate is smooth and semi dry, modest fine carbonation. Taste follows the nose - big sweet foam banana candy! Clear as day. Lesser ripe banana. A touch of dark malt under there somewhere. Light finish. Foam banana linger. Good fun but a bit overcooked with the banana!

Smooth dry dark malts, mild dark chocolate and modest vanilla, not as strong as the nose. Tangy dark fruits. Light dry finish. A tad dry but tasty.

Handpull cask at the Mill, Cambridge. Dark brown with a ring of tan/khaki carbonation. Chalky coffee/liquorice aroma. Sweet taste with a bitter/salty edge. Some blackberry and Marmite in the aftertaste. Body slightly flimsy but that’s ok. Impressive.

Cask at the Mill, Cambridge. Bright yellow, clear with a little bit of white head. Grapefruit, pineapple and a but of lemongrass in the hop. Nicely balanced bittersweet taste which stays throughout the sip. Intense bitterness presents at the very finish. A lovely golden ale.
