Description
Damn Good Beer Brewed in the Centre of Cambridge:
You don’t get to call yourself a Brew House without backing it up. We do.
Right in the middle of our pub sits a working microbrewery. Vanessa runs it. She’s our Head Brewer, and she doesn’t mess around.
The taps rotate. There’s always something new. Show up and find out what’s on – your mouth’s been waiting for this.
Want to see how it’s made? Book a brewery tour or experience day. Vanessa will take you behind the scenes. You’ll sip, swirl, sniff (yeah, sniff) – and actually understand what makes beer worth drinking.
No fluff. No filler. Just damn good beer brewed the right way.
Changed name to King Street Brew House late 2025.

Handpull cask from the Cambridge Brewhouse. Light brown - the colour of strong iced tea - and slightly hazy without much head.. Bit of caramel on the nose with notes of biscuit and strawberry. Taste is bittersweet with a nice balance. The bitter fruity hop extends its influence in the finish, leading to some earthy tannic notes in the aftertaste. Thin, flat body. Fairly average.

Keg at the brewpub. Very black and impenetrable, with a creamy ring of khaki head. Smell is agreeable but not very IPA-y: I’m getting liquorice and rosewater with some chocolatey tangents. Same sort of gripe with the taste: bittersweet and shot through with spicy liquorice but lacking an attractive hope character. Long boozy finish. Black raspberry and even more liquorice in the aftertaste. Not a great representation of the style but that’s not how we rate. On purely hedonic terms it’s certainly tasty enough, but fairly forgettable and slightly too boozy for what it is.

Handpull cask at the Cambridge Brewhouse. Very, very dark brown with a small ring of cream-coloured head. Vanilla bean is fairly strong in the nose, although there’s also a hint of the promised chocolate. More fresh vanilla in the taste, with a rounding bitter hop that keeps it from turning overly sweet. A generous touch of sourness in the long finish. Some liquorice, smoke and cooking chocolate alongside French vanilla in the aftertaste. Medium body but flat on the tongue. Verdict: I had this after trying their chocolate and banana stout (q.v.); this has more of a genuine, balanced feel although I prefer the sweetness of the other...

Handpull cask at the Cambridge Brewhouse. Black, impenetrable, with a ring of tan head. I get quite a lot of banana in the aroma. It’s slightly artificial and very sweet-smelling, and there’s an odd but not objectionable note of pepper. The taste brings forth more banana notes - sweet but pleasant and quite refreshing - along with a bit of liquorice and sweet/savoury fudge. Long sweet finish, with blackberry, spice and yet more banana in the aftertaste. Thin body for a stout and quite oily. I quite took to this, surprisingly.

Keg at the Old Bicycle Shop, Cambridge. Golden with a floaty white head and a fair bit of lacing. Grapefruit, gooseberry, spruce and some resinous and malty notes in the aroma. Bittersweet taste with a fruity note, underpinned by malt. Some acidity in the finish. Basic but tasty enough.

Chelmsford Winter Beer Fest (with Rune, Rasmus, Saxo and Camons) @ KEGS. Cask. Almost clear gold beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Light palate, dry with modest fine carbonation. Sweetish and somewhat lagerish malts. Semi sweet floralness. A little ripe fruit and modest spice. Semi dry finish. Quite ESBish. Tidy bitter.
