Description
The first references to a brewery in the Weltenburg Monastery are to be found in the Weltenburg Nekrologium, in which it states that the master brewer died. Another scientifically recognized source is a recorded entry in the “Libellus Traditionum”, which is over 900 years old, and which dates from shortly before or after 1050.

In the barely millennium to the present day, monastic beer production in Weltenburg was only interrupted by the secularization from 1803 to 1846. In 1846 the brewery became monastery property again, and it has remained there to this day. The Weltenburg monastery brewery can therefore rightly be called the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Contract brewed for Weltenburger by Brauerei Bischofshof in Regensburg. ABV is 5.4%. Very pale straw colour, slightly hazy, huge head. Lovely typical Hefe-Weissbier aroma, notes of cloves and banana / bubblegum. The flavour has also banana and cloves, hints of lemons, light bodied, minimal hops.

Shared by Badgerben. This is one of the best dunkels I have had. The aroma and flavor is very full with roasted malt and caramel, almost like a full bodied bock. Heavy palate.

50 cL bottle. Pours deep golden yellow, clear, with a white semi dense head. Sweet malty aroma with a hint of fruit. Flavour is soft malty, with notes of caramel malt - but not dominantly. Ends soft malty with a mild bitterness. Nicely balanced.

Medium offwhite fine-laced lasting head. Hazy opaque murky brown body. Papery vaguely roasty wheaty aroma. Delicate clean roasty caramelly taste with muddy wheaty notes. Taste just fades out, leaving a wheaty papery taste. Vaguely earthy. Nice, but not much taste. (0.5l bottle, Oktoberfest, Oslo.)

Medium shiny white fine-laced lasting head. Hazy opaque orangey yellow body. Milky, wheaty banana aroma with spicy notes. Clean, spicy herbal milky banana taste, quite subdued. Delicate, harmonic, and balanced. Citric notes. Dryish lightly acidic aftertaste. Nice session beer. Too light in taste, really. (0.5l bottle, Oktoberfest, Oslo.)

On tap at Berliner Bierfestival. Pale golden body and a white head that diminished rather quickly, but left lacings. Nice hoppy nose, quite fruity as well, with grains in the background. Pleasant fruity and hoppy flavor that didn’t leave too much bitterness. Some grains as well. The finish is short and slightly vague, and has some hops. A bit thin body. A pleasant and quaffable beer, but a bit anonymous. (070805)
