Description
In May 1867, the Leinenkugel family brewery was founded in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin by Jacob Leinenkugel. He was a family man driven by an iron work ethic, and he knew that his German family heritage would play an integral part of his brewery’s success. Today, the sixth generation of Leinenkugels continues to brew some of the same family-inspired recipes that Jacob poured his heart and soul into. Over the years, our family has grown and so has our brewery, but our history and heritage remain at the forefront.

This actually doesn't suck…
Okay, same old minimal megabrew head that disappears quickly, but there is a pleasant smell here. A decent slightly roasty taste and malty sweetness without the usual corny taste. I was not thrilled, but at least pleasantly surprised, and will have to give it above average marks for that. As I work my way through the "Leine's Lodge Tackle Box," I'm a little more hopeful than I was with their Berry Weiss.
Tried the draft version, July 3. Nothing that makes me want to change my vote up or down. Would have a bit more malty profile if it weren't poured into danged frozen glass. An improvement over what a "Miller Dark" would be.

Agreed. It's your girlfriend's beer for when she can't get a Dewey Stevens. Looks like Champale when you pour it. Gotta admit it smells nice. But tastes like a wine cooler with a bit of malt in it. Sweetness is almost saccharine. I mean it would be okay as a hot-weather cooler, but if this is all Miller can come up with in the fruit beer category, New Glarus has nothing to worry about.
On a second tasting, I had to drop this a few more points. Straight out of the bottle, all I get is a vaguely Trix flavored mess. And that's not even seeing the disturbing blue color.

Bottled. Can’t find a lot to get enthused about here. Kinda tastes more like any American lager beer than anything with "honey" or "weiss" in the name. No complaints about the color though, smell and taste are not off-putting. I had this in a typical Wisconsin bar where this was the only alternative to macro-crap, so it was more refreshing than it otherwise might be. If you had a category for value pricing, this would rate higher.
Re-sampled, 5/29/03. I had a bottle from the ”Leinie's Lodge Tackle Box” and my opinion has improved somewhat. There actually is a spicy weizen aspect in the nose that improves the tasting experience. Maybe the bottles I drank at the bar had been in a glass-doored colloer under flourescent lights for too long? Maybe I had this inside a cardboard box in my fridge at proper beer temps? I dunno. I'm notching my rating up from 3.2 to whatever it is currently.

Dios mio! What a puckering sour tone you have, Lardass. This is a very thin, watery version of Doppelbock, although hints of characteristic flavors (syrupy, caramely malts) are present. Hits the tongue with a nasty sourness which soon subsides to a weak, sweet flavor. Doppelbock for the masses? Pass on it. This one tarnishes the name "Doppelbock."

Light golden color. Lots of bubbles. Thick head. Standard lager taste with a little hops. I don't know why this is rated a 3; there just isn't much there to enjoy. Bad chemical finish makes this hard to drink if it is not ice cold. --- Beer merged from original tick of Leinenkugel's Original on 03 Aug 2018 at 20:36 - Score: 1

Light brown. Large, thin head that lasts. Roasted flavor. A little thin, but not bad.

Yellow. I could not taste any honey or sweetness. Reminded me of a light beer. My first American Wheat, tastes like no other wheat beer I have had. Dont bother with this one.

Light red with a tan head. Sweet aroma of fruit, followed by the sweetest taste I've had in a beer. Drink quickly before it has a chance to warm. Not a bad beer, and it is something my girlfriend would drink with me.

Update with an improvement: What happens when you make a clean lager and include a hefty dose of caramel malt, a modicum of Munich malt, and light hopping? You get a sweetish characterful lager, but it is not an Oktoberfest/Marzen in my book. This is a nice beer, well balanced and drinkable. Perhaps a tad light in body, giving it a wateriness. Nice spicy hops in the nose, if understated.
