Description
Set in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia, Blue Mountain opened in 2007 as the region’s first rural brewery. Founders Taylor and Mandi Smack and Matt Nucci had a vision to bring the brewery experience out of the normal hustle and bustle of an urban environment. Today, we’re still focused on making an inspired range of the highest-quality beers that can be enjoyed at our two locations in beautiful Nelson County, or in bottles and cans throughout Virginia and beyond.

Sample at the Day Before Labor Day party. This beer is nearly black with a medium light brown head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, charred malt and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with a rich bourbon and oak character, and flavors of chocolate malt, yeast and spices. The finish is chocolatey with some spiced alcohol left behind. Good all around.

Taste is strong bitter hops with notes of yeast, banana, butterscotch, peach, pineapple and alcohol. Medium bodied and very complex.

Served on nitro at the brewery. Opaque brown color with cascading bubbles ot the bottom of the glass, leading to a 3-finger thick and creamy head. Rich roasted malt aroma. Chocolate and nuts. Taste is pleasantly bitter. Grain, chocolate, nuts caramel and an interesting faint minty tea aftertaste. Hops make themselves known in a nice way. Slightly watery feel right at the beginning that quickly gives way to that nice nitro creaminess.

Intriguing aroma of jelly beans, raisins, brown sugar, and marshmallows. Dark brown color, medium tan head, good lacing. Tastes of licorice, menthol, and hard candy. Bittersweet finish resembles horehound, but not quite. Thinnish mouthfeel which I prefer for this style. It missed the mark on taste for me, but I’m sure it will appeal to a lot of people. Nice crafting!

Lemon zest aroma. Clear golden color, little head. Tastes of slight phenolic lemon grass. Solid offering from a new brewer. There is potential for improvement. Disclaimer: No, I couldn’t do any better, but my experience is only in cider.
