Description
The brewery was founded in 1988 by the couple Pierre-Alex Carlier and Marie-Robert Pourtois. On March 24, the first brew was brewed that was named La Moneuse. A 7 hl brewing installation was custom-made by Meura. In 1992, investments were made in a bottling line. The eldest son Kevin Carlier now heads the brewery, along with his wife Bérangère Deschamps and his father-in-law Claude Deschamps.

375ml from Khoury's. Stemless wine glass back at the hotel after another show. Slightly hazy medium gold with a tall, fluffy but thin head. Herbal-soapy & slightly astringent nose. Bright, herbal, with an acidic bite upfront. Middle turns it more medicinal & raw bittergreen/dank. Menthol. Fizzy, strong carbonation, somewhat acidic & lingering astringency on a nearly dry, dusty pallette. Bit too much dank but kinda good.

First pour tonight @Strangeways. Didn't ask how old it was. Clear, dull, honey gold, frothy stemless pour. Honey wheat loaf, some citrus burn, mellow clove, inviting. Semi-sweet, honey orange spice, rye itch, bit of lemon, everlasting froth, popsicle stick dryness on the finish. Close to a witbier. Nice.

On tap at The Rake, pours a mostly clear bright golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out a nice Belgian yeast character — low sweetness and esters — with some rustic notes. Flavour is full of Belgian yeast, gentle esters, rustic notes, and just enough sugars. Properly done as expected, with reasonable depth; perhaps could use slightly higher carb. Good stuff.

375mL bottle from Beer Temple, drunk 2/9/24. Medium-sized, light-tan head sits at 2 cm. Dark, crystal clear, with mahogany and ruby highlights. Uhh, is that green bell pepper? Am I smelling correctly? I mean...that's what it smells like. The unmistakable coffee-gone-bad bell pepper nose. Except there's no coffee here. Oh wait, there is! Yikes. Whatever the case, it absolutely dominates the nose. I don't get anything else and sadly, no yeast signature/character. Heavy, sharp, intense roast character. I guess the nose is just a manifestation of that intense roastiness. Tons of carbonation, good, medium body with strong maltiness, moderate sweetness and reasonable attenuation. Though it could be drier. Milk chocolate, caramel, light vanilla, moderate roast, tapering off a bit as the beer breathes. No alcohol or flaw, but, I don't know, this is most definitely not the Blaugies with which I grew up and fell in love. The yeast, while not tacky or crude, is almost no where to be found. Just some faint plaster/mineral on the finish.

Bottle as Blaugies La Moneuse Special Winter Ale. A dark amber beer, a head is quite big and beige. Aroma has fresher dried fruitness, some earthyness. Taste has fruitness, also with dried fruits, light herbal spicyness. Medium bodied, high carbonation. Pretty nice.

Bottle. Just cloudy gold with a white head that fades. Aroma of apricots and their stones, doughy bread, hard spices, flowers. A little sweet with peach as well as apricot, marzipan, light spicy bitterness. An odd (but pleasant) fire damaged furniture note. Tasty, rustic.
