Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

For the style it’s great. The cherry is quite forward, but the underlying schwarzbier is quite good. Simmel Dresden

A new review to replace another one they've lost. Anyway, to me, this is one of the all-time classic best schwarz beers. Aromas of malt and roast. Flavors are similar to nose slightly on the suite side but with the roast and a little bitter plus carbonation to balance. Very smooth texture nice body and finish.

Quite European. Loads of heavy caramel malt notes backed up by candied apples and wheat bread, followed by mild notes of orange marmalade, yeast, and slight floral hoppiness. Pretty damn strong for a pale ale; RB has it listed as an IPA, and it does make for about as classical a representation of that style as available these days. Decent, but odd.
