Description
With the creation of Village brewery De Meester we want to re-establish the tradition of artisan brewing in Kuurne. Our beers are brewed solely according to the traditional brewing processes, with the greatest care and only with natural raw materials. For our beers, we use hop flowers from Poperinge exclusively and refrain for using nor colour pigments, nor foam improvers, nor artificial seasonings. The result of this traditional work methods are the beers of Village brewery De Meester. Beers with character, interwoven with aromas from the different local hops.

6/II/16 - bottle @ Brugs Bierfestival - BB: n/a (2016-115) Thanks to the Belgian ratebeer crew for sharing today's beers!

Clear pale yellow beer, small to no head. Aroma: pretty dirty, spicy, something is very wrong here, yeasty, nope. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: smoky, clearly some bamberg smoked malts, which I actually appreciate, most of the times, but it doesn't work out in this yeasty beer, gives it a dirty touch. Aftertaste: bit sweet, yeast, some citrus, little bitter, smoky, very unpleasant. Nope!

6/II/16 - bottle @ Brugs Bierfestival - BB: n/a (2016-114) Thanks to the Belgian ratebeer crew for sharing today's beers!

Clear red brown beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit fruity, yeast, melons, sweet, caramel, bit malty, some banana. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit malty, soapy, metallic, banana peel, meh. Aftertaste: little bitter, yeasty, soft roast, sweet finish. Smells like too high temperature fermentation?

One of this new village brewery’s beers, bottle bought at Diester Bierfestival. Thin, lightly lacing, pale greyish beige head, breaking quickly in the middle (presumably under the influence of the alcohol) but retaining very well around the edges of the glass. Very dark brown colour but still translucent with a warm, ’autumny’ mahogany reddish brown hue, clear. Opulent and not unpleasant aroma of a lot of caramel candy and butterscotch, ’Haagse hopjes’ and Belgian chocolates, toasted bread, candied dates, raisin, banana liqueur, marzipan or even amaretto, kahlua, black pepper, ruby port, coriander, dried leaves but in a ’clean’ kind of way. Candied sweet, almost Belgian chocolate-like onset, very sugary but refined and not too cloying, candied orange touch, dry banana, dates, marzipan, soft carbo just fit for the style, smooth and resinous, supple mouthfeel, thoroughly caramelly to the point of becoming candyish, toasted and chocolatey with a very light, soft, not too pronounced but quite well-balancing roasted bitterishness; noble peppery hops are added in the finish but maltiness is key here, leaving a bittersweet coating in the back of the mouth along with some coriander spiciness and a quite outspoken, liqueurish and brandyish alcohol effect, leaving a slight burn and warming the chest. Perhaps a tad too alcoholic in that sense and clearly very much tilted to the candied sweet side, but if you like this style, this is recommendable. The candied, ’praline’-like, sweet and resinous profile with spicy edges strongly reminds me of the Gouden Carolus range: it seems either Gouden Carolus Classic or Cuvée Van De Keizer Blauw was taken as a model in developing this beer. But even as a Gouden Carolus epigone, this is a rather classy example of the style and a nice surprise coming from a new micro brewery - it makes me curious about the rest of their range. Only downside to me is the alcohol, which is clearly too obvious here.

Bottle from systembolaget. A bit boring for a Christmas beer. Some maltiness but nothing more exciting. Descent.

330 ml. bottle sampled. Wow, a beer for another new commission brewery that brews its beers at Gulden Spoor. There have been a surprising amount of these lately, are these guys planning on becoming the new De Proefbrouwerij (in terms of quantity not quality I presume?). It must be noted that I cannot find the name Gulden Spoor anywhere on the label. It does specify that it was brewed only Belgian hops. Pours hazy deep golden, sparkling, small but substation off-white head. Nose is very odd, heavily dominated by some odd spice, a review below suggests, bog-myrtle, that could very well be it, very odd, very heavy & not really my kind of thing plus on top it is mixed with an odd cooked vegetables, cooked cabbage & ginger notes, even more of the same spice, soap, a bit chemical. Body is overly fizzy. The taste is dominated by the same heavy bog-myrtle spice, plastic bitter, wild bitter uneatable plants, coriander, heavy medicinal & medicinal herbs, some caramel, chemical, touch sugar, soap, vegetable, light touch of booze,… Very weird & I foresee this one being a hugely polarizing beer. It isn’t really for me, it felt way too much like something that someone practicing in alternative medicine might prescribe. Very weird, I can foresee some people really liking this one. Just not me, other people.

Bottle @ home. Almost clear orange color, medium sized off-white to beige head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is malts, herbal, lightly vegetal. Taste malts, quite a lot of herbs or spices, again a bit vegetal, lightly alcoholic. Average to medium body, firm a bit fizzy carbonation. Not my kind of beer.

12oz bottle. Poured a light amber color with a medium sized foamy off-white head. Aroma was light sweet malts, some caramel sweetness. Earthy hops. Flavor was mostly sweet, stale caramel with some light bland toffee.

Cask at Ashley’s. Pours a near clear deep amber with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma is full of Christmas spice with a bit of sweet grains and spruce. Flavor is similarly full of spice with a sweet grain backbone.
