4.3% ABV Bottle, best before 26 Sept 2010, drank and reviewed 10 Aug 2010. This beer was named the CAMRA Champion Beer of Great Britain last week (in cask form, at the Great British Beer Festival). My 500ml brown bottle was poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard. As the name suggests, it is pale in colour, a pale blonde in fact, almost lager like with its snow white head on top. The head tried to stay and it left a bit of lacing as the beer level sank. The aroma lets you know it is an ale though, far to many hop esters for it to be a pilsner/lager. The taste is also more hop than malts or anything else. The blend is pleasant, the hop bitterness not being allowed complete control of the flavours. The true hop bitterness comes as the mouth dries. Refreshing and easy to drink, but it wouldn’t have got my vote as the Best of Britain.

Appearance: Batch 2813, nice label. Yellow golden. Slightly hazy, some white head. Aroma: Hops, flowers, fruit. Taste: Lots of hops - too much bitterness? Fruit, citrus. Info: 500ml bottle, 8/4-2012, 41/300M, BB: 28/2-2013

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 16 Mar 2012, drank and reviewed on 17 Aug 2011. Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard. The beer had a slight chill haze to it, most likely my fault for cooling it for too long. The colour was a dirty light amber, an off-white head sitting on top. The smell was of sweet peas and toffee, so a floral molasses type of thing. The taste was initially had a malty sweetness, but once you swill it around in the mouth a bit you can feel the hop bitterness kicking in. It’s OK, I’ll not be rushing out to buy crates of it, but it is the best ’Royal Wedding’ beer that I’ve had (for William and Kate anyway).

500ml Bottle conditioned, best before the end of June 2012: poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard during March 2012. My bottle claims 5.0%ABV (as the premium strenght bootled variety). Exceedingly pale for a British beer, urine straw coloured in fact: on top a pure white head. Hop aroma, no room for anything else. The taste was also all hops, citrus, piney and hoppy: the Maris Otter malts are there for the colour not the taste and they give very little to the overall flavour of the beer. This is a fine summer beer and easy to drink, refreshing and thirst quenching, a bit too hop heavy for my normal choice but enjoyable non the less.

Clear yellow to blond beer, small creamy white head, pretty stable, adhesive leaving a nice lacing. Aroma: some exotic fruits, pineapple and passion fruits, bit yeasty, hay. MF: no carbon, medium to full body. Taste: little fruity in the start, peaches, citrus, bit grassy, hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste: yeasty, barnyard notes, somewhat fruity, dry bitter ending. Not bad, the American hops are giving it some character.

Cask at the Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham on 29th December 2011. Pale gold with thin white head and almost no lacing. Spicy, yeasty aroma then a beautiful spicy/hoppy blend in-mouth - aniseed, grassy hop and citrus. Citric soapy taste leads to a lemony finish. Smooth mouthfeel and light to medium body.

50cl bottle @ home shared by Joes. Clear yellow/golden color, small white head that diminishes almost instantly. Smell fruityness and some hops. Taste is about the same: fruity and hoppy. Pretty nice. Medium fizzy carbo, medium body.

Cask at The Hop Pole, Aylesbury. Clear nut brown. An aroma that is part bready, part viola, part phenols and part spicy hops. Mid sweet with doughy malt and bold mouthfeel. Fairly low bitterness. Interesting but heavy footed.
