650 ml bottle that willrunforbeer shared, thanks bud. Fresh bottle with a date of August, 2015. Mostly clear gold with thin head in a snifter. Aroma is light tropical fruit, herbal hints with a light citrus rind, pith notes.

Kind of an oxymoron with the " Pre Prohibition" Double IPA title! There was not a Double IPA then! Ha ha ha funny shit. Grain base with light pale malts giving weak balance. The bittering hops giving a lasting effect but it’s more like bitterness for the sake of being bitter rather than a whole lot of actual hop flavor. Maybe light pine, borderline astringent. However, interesting only takes a beer so far. Nothing off putting so I would say give it a try but not anything to get real excited for.

Pours gold into a snifter. White head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface leaving spot lacing. Caramel, citrus and meringue aromas. Medium bodied with hot caramel and tropical fruit skin front go back.

Bottle at Chris & Ruth’s pre-GBBF shindig, 2015. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Chocolate raisin and toffee aroma. Treacle toffee and caramel flavour. Tasty.

Pours black into a tulip. Mocha head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Dark chocolate and smoky molasses aromas. Medium bodied with hot chocolate, smoked marshmallow and oak upfront turning to a very hot alcohol finish.

Deep copper-golden body is clear and shows a medium amount of white head with good retention.
Fruity, juicy hops in the nose are quite well-done. No rampant acidity (not that you’d expect that from mosaic or sorachi) and with plentiful citrus and strong floral notes. Ruby red grapefruit, to a lesser degree and hints of light mango and meyer lemon. Really nice, with just a touch of honey-like malt in the background, easily balancing and no alcohol or flaws noted.
Zesty hop bitterness leads off the beer, with a touch of honey and bread dough softening things immediately. Lots of fruits, dry hay and grass and meyer lemon-like citrus notes all seem to explode. Lovely, unique hop profile free from all of the grapefruit and pine that are so many IPAs recently. Clean, well-attenuated malts and ample carbonation. Great beer, one of their best in a while.

Bottle at ChrisO’s Pre-GBBF tasting 2015. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The nose is soft. rich roast, cocoa, toasted grain, earthy roast, filter coffee and toasted brown bread. The taste is rich roast, earthy, toasty, cocoa, burnt malts, umami, salted liquorice, charred wood and light spice with a dry finish. Medium - full body and fine, prickly carbonation. Rather nice stuff.

Wow, if the guy that gave it a 2.9 thinks this is smokey, I ’d hate to see his reaction to Schlenkerla....I get very little smoke in the nose, just a bare hint of dry campfire/light ash. Mostly you’ve got milk chocolate-covered coffee beans, vanilla and light prunes/tobacco. It’s malty, sure, but not obnoxiously so and at this abv, the alcohol is quite well-concealed. Fruitiness is pretty minimal too, surprisingly. Would expect more esters and candy-like flavors at this level.
Malt begins soft, creamy and full of milk chocolate and vanilla-cream flavors. It pretty quickly meets some light alcohol and dry woodsmoke, gaining a little bit of salinity and drying out nicely. Moderate roastiness, tobacco and prunes linger on the finish, with light coffee notes and more of the ashiness. Thick body, which dosent seem too bothered by the alcohol (usually alcohol creates some thinning) and while, overall, it’s on the sweet side, it’s pretty near best-case-scenario for 12%. Carbonation is low, but appropriate and no flaws are noted.
Jet black body is of undetermined clarity with a tan head that quickly recedes to a ring.

Almost always a great apperance from Pretty Things....high clarity, good foamy white head and well-carbonated golden liquid.
Good, semi-aggressive hop nose boasts grapefruit, oranges, lemons and lighter fruits (apples, cherries). It’s presented on a very dry backing of base malts and just a touch of bread/biscuit shows through. No alcohol or flaws.
Hoppy and dry in the flavor, it is pretty well free from any obnoxious acidity, though it’s no slouch in bitterness. Most of this is balanced by a crackery pale malt base with ever-so-slight sweet honey notes. Lots of floral notes through the middle with building citrus ending in a grapefruit and cherry-like finish, with marmalade and lemons lingering. Very carbonated, with a malt texture that is, perhaps, a touch scratchy at times. Wouldnt mind a bit more softness/suppleness from it.

Bottled. Black with lace. Roasty nose, creamy, umami and soy, wood, chocolate. Sweet flavors of cocoa, wood, roast, soy.

Pre GBBF tasting at Chris and Ruth’s. Almost opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth with decent fine carbonation. Fair bit of spice. Mild dark chocolate. Good tangy dark fruits. Light semi dry finish. Pretty drinkable.
