Description
Founded in 1995, The Grainstore Brewery was formed through the collaboration of two friends, Tony Davis formally Head Brewer and Production Director at Ruddles Brewery and Mike Davies of Davro Fabrication. With Tony’s 30 years of brewing experience behind them, and Mike’s engineering and steel fabrication expertise at their disposal, the two set to work on a derelict Victorian grain store situated next to Oakham Railway Station. Following renovation of the building and the lowering into position of the large fermenting vessels, copper and conditioning tanks, the brewery tap opened its doors in September 1995. The 15 barrel brew house plant with its capacity to brew 60 barrels per week, started brewing its first brew, ‘Cooking Bitter’ a few months later. This tradition has since been continued by Tony’s son William Davis and his business partner Peter Atkinson, as the brewery and Tap go from strength to strength.

Random rebrew not sure why. Romney is hardly even a pundit. But the beer is light malty. Some light citrus. Light body.

500ml bottle from the brewery. Pours a deep cola brown, medium sized beige froth atop. Aroma of dusty dark malts. Flavour profile presents a gentle dark malt profile, soft roast with very mild chocolate notes. Ok for a dark mild. Should've had this yesterday for a mild in May beer!

330ml can from the brewery. A re-badge of Lily the Pink by Celtic Marches. Can't be bothered cutting and pasting my rating for that.

500ml bottle from the brewery. Clear deep gold, modest foamy white head. Aroma of caramel, malt. Flavour profile is malty sweet caramel for the most part with a brisk bitterness running throughout. Fine.

275ml clear bottle from the brewery, shared with Jeremy at his place. Pours a clear chestnut brown, off-white head. Aged toffee and caramel aroma. Flavour profile is reliant largely on malty sweet caramel with some dried dark fruit notes emerging. Has a weak barley wine feel. Ok.

10th April 2024, mega Panda and tasting session with minutemat at my place. Mat brought this along, a clear 275ml bottle from the brewery. Clean and clear chestnut red body, weak off-white wispy head. Malty caramel front, sweet and 'figgy'. Liked it!

330ml can from Grainstore brewery. Syrupy sweet bland cider. Slack Alice re-badged as their own. Cannot stand breweries that do this.

330ml can from Grainstore Brewery. Clear gold, lightly caramelised fruit, gentle carbonation. Simplistic. Flavour profile exactly like Thundering Molly from Celtic Marches.

500ml bottle take-out from the brewpub. Pours dark with a decent pale tan head. Aroma of robust roast, dark malt. Flavour profile builds on this with additional espresso and bitter dark chocolate, with a solid roasty bitter close. Nicely flavoursome stout.
