Description
In the hands of the Bosteels family for over 200 years, the brewery relies today on the craftmanship of seven generations. In 1791, Jean-Baptist Bosteels established the brewery, and has been followed by generations who took over the brewery with zeal and never stop brewing even during the world wars. At that time, the brewery played such an important role in the town, the family Bosteels was such influential people that we are not surprised that 3 on the 7 generations have been Town Mayors.
In the 1930’s Antoine Bosteels, 5th generation, carried on the brewing dynasty and played an important role expanding the sales of the Bosteels Pils into other regions such as Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. His son Ivo Bosteels honored the iconic beer of Pauwel Kwak by bringing it back to the market in 1980; this is the beginning of the strong beers for the Brewery Bosteels. In the year 1990, Ivo’s son, Antoine Bosteels, the 7th generation, understood the potential of the strong beers and especially the trend for the blond ones. Driven by passion of the art of brewing and guided by his creativity, Antoine is at the roots of the Tripel Karmeliet and the DeuS Brut des Flandres.
It was announced in 2016 that the brewery would be taken over by beer giant AB InBev, however Antoine Bosteels will remain chairman of the Board of Directors and will also remain operationally involved to ensure business continuity. In addition, the brewing activities will remain based in Buggenhout.

Bottle: Pours a cloudy straw blonde with a massive white head that just doesn’t want to leave. Clumps of foamy lacing. Nose is noticably Belgian; of fruits, yeast, and grain. The taste is what separates this from the pack. A blend of apple, pear, and citrus round out the fruitiness. Light yeast, malt, and some spices are present in a very smooth, clean, and drinkable ale.

Bottled. Clear, copper body and a beige head. Caramel, dried fruits, hops, candisugar and spicy notes in the aroma, but maybe a bit weak. Alcohol, dried fruits, sugar, spices and hops and some more alcohol in the flavor. Warming, full-bodied beer with a warming finish. Dried fruits, caramel and spice-notes as well in the finish. A real classic beer, and the story behind the beer goes well with the flavor. (070404)

Pours bright gold into a tulip. Significant head recedes at a medium pace to skim surface with slight spot lacing. Malt and lemon aromas. Slick with slightly sweet caramel finish. Alcohol burn after a long finish. A little sweeter than I’d hoped.

Bottle (2002 enjoyed in 2007): Poured a medium beige/orangey color ale with a light white bubbly head with average retention. Aroma of dry cereal with some saison-like yeasty notes. Taste was quite dry with some nice malt presence and a dry yeasty finish. Carbonation was a bit too much for my liking but I guess that is part of this beer style. Even though this beer packs a bit of alcohol, I couldn’t detect any alcohol notes. While this beer was quite interesting and complex, it does confirm that I am not a big fan of Champagne and even though brew with beer ingredient, I still don’t dig the mouthfeel.

This is one of those brews that I am almost afraid to rate with my bad taste tastebuds. On tap at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse in Pgh. This pours like any other pale yellow american ubiquitous lager as far as color goes. Has a clean white head. Aroma is not outstanding and there are a few streams of carbonation rising with in. The tap handle on this is cool looking. Initial flavor is slightly strong but definitely not oppressive. Much milder than the domestic coarse trippels I’ve tasted such as Southern Tier. Interesting off flavor on the onset and then it immediately fades to an alky hint. Again, this is not oppressive, it is just that you can tell the alky content is letting you know its there if you want to notice. Low carbonation, very little tingle on the back of the throat. I am not overly impressed with this beer and will probably get hammered for my numbers. This trippel just does not appeal to my delicate girlie taste buds. THe alky is continually apparent but not in the face. Finish is immediately medium bitter but fades after a few moments to just a memory. Overall, not bad but I’ve been spoiled by Grimbergen Blonde and Chimay White. On par with Allagash trippel and Southern Tier.

Light stone fruit and banana aroma. Slightly hazy medium gold color with a vigorous real ale white head that laces. Starts fruit sweet, could be a mix of peach and orange, might not be; it then has a hit of yeastiness, gets a change in sweetness, seems to have some hop, but might be a bit of fruit peel without the sugar. Finishes very dry (after all the sugar runs through your mouth). A bit puckery despite the sweetness. As it warms, it seems that orange definitely comes forth in both aroma and flavor. Complex little thing.
