Description
In 1981, Peter Mauldon, the great grandson of Anna Maria decided to re-establish the family tradition and start a brewery in Sudbury once again. Peter had been too young to be involved in the original family business and had previously pursued a career with Messrs. Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

Cask at the Townhouse, Ely. Golden brown, very clear, with not a lot of head. Grass and candy sugar aroma. Clean and crisp. The taste starts sweet and malty with hints of burnt sugar and golden syrup. There’s a bitter twist at the end, leading to a surprisingly bitter aftertaste, without quite leaving behind the malty sweetness. A cracking session bitter.

Cask at the Grain & Hop Store, Cambridge. Dark brown with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, with a distinct liquorice note. Some nutty and chocolatey vibes in there as well. The taste is sweet with an odd medicinal/herbal tinge, followed up by a bitter finish. It’s not a clean bitter though, more like a sour fruity bitter. Oddly astringent aftertaste. Nice enough body, quite oily but full for this ABV. A beer that starts well and ends less well.

Handpull cask at the Townhouse, Ely. Golden brown, a fair bit of white head and a hell of a lot of lacing. Light bramble, grain and red cherry aroma. Bittersweet taste with a sweet cherry edge. Stone fruit-y without being cough syrup-y. Body is a bit boring. Pretty tasty and solid in construction but not in the least adventurous.

Handpull cask at the Townhouse, Ely. Golden brown with a proper little white head. Honey, coriander and hay dominate the aroma. Lip-smackingly sweet taste. Short finish, but the palate is decent. I like this. It’s understated but good through and through.

Cask at the Bricklayers Arms, Bishop’s Stortford. Dark gold with a bit of whitish head on the top. Lemony metallic smell. Tastes weakly sweet/sour, hints of rancid butter and forest floor. Finish is okay, maybe I’m just glad it’s over. Not a great beer by Mauldon’s standards (or anyone’s).
