Description
In 1981, Peter Mauldon, the great grandson of Anna Maria decided to re-establish the family tradition and start a brewery in Sudbury once again. Peter had been too young to be involved in the original family business and had previously pursued a career with Messrs. Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Black colour (no surprise). Aroma of raisins, cigarbox and coffee. Surprisingly fruity flavour for a stout (=surprising if I hadn’t read the IBF programme), dark fruits on a background of espresso coffee and dusty roasted malts. Interesting beer!

Transparently black. Interesting aroma of coffee and licorice. Dry, but an insufficient body gives a slight metallic note. Fairly low bitterness.

Coffee colour. Very roasty and quite dry. Rounded and medium bodied. Salty with a bit of coffee and a really bitter finish. Definitely wintery.

Orange amber. Appley, sweet and light bodied. Mellow and fruity with some butter and a honeyish finish. It is rare that I drink a cask ale I like this little.
