(Cask at Wenlock Arm, London, 4 Aug) Colour is almost black with ruby hints, foamy off-white head. Nose is malty and fruity with notes of berries (blueberries, blackberries and cherries). Taste is malty with wild berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries), some chocolate and a modest hoppy bitterness in the finish. Very tasty mild.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is pitch black with a beige foamy head. Nose is malty, roasted with hints of smoke, tar and black coffee. Taste starts malty, roasted and tarry, turning into chocolate (or rather chocolate mousse) and burnt toast, leaving with a nice bitter finish. Mainly dry, but with some sweetness coming through in the middle. Smooth, medium body. Great balance, complex, but still very drinkable. Lovely!

Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival Fri July 7th 2006. Black in colour with barely a head, roasted notes not too disimilar to the E&S 1872 Porter also available, but different in many other ways, much smoother, more chocolatey very full flavoured and dare I say it a bit more refined than the Porter, this really was a stunner. Not the sort of beer that you would ordinarily go for on a summers evening but it was smashing, all the same I think that had I have had this in the depths of winter it may have scored higher still.

Cask at Merton Beer Festival July 7th, 8th 2006. As milds go this was a typical of the style, absolutely fine in every way but lacking a bit of individual character. Very dark brown with brown frothy head, good roasted notes and some bitter chocolate flavours pushing through. A bit thin and a touch sweet and the least impressive of the three milds on offer.

(Cask at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Colour is amber/tawny, with little head. Not perfectly clear. Nose is fruity and malty with hints of citrus (tangerine, grapefruit) and floral hops. Taste is fruity, a bit on the sweet side, with a nice bitter and citrussy (grapefruit) finish. Probably served slightly too warm. Nice, but I have a feeling it could be in better condition.

Cask@Oliver Twist, Stockholm). Amber colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma of caramel and hops. The flavour is surprisingly different, strong caramel and hay mixed with sweet fruits. Very wellbalanced, easy to drink and refreshing on a hot day.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm) Colour is pale amber, with a firm, frothy head. Nose is fruity with citrus (orange, mandarin) and a grassy, fresh hop character. Taste is fruity with notes of citrus and a nice hoppy character. Starts rather sweet, turns a bit drier, with a hoppy, a bit metallic, finish. Nice and refreshing.

[Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm] Clear golden. Fruity and sweet with evident notes of honey. There’s some grain and a touch of grassy hops, followed by light resiny biterness. Too sticky.
