Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm, 3 June) Colour is amber with bubbly, disappearing, head. Nose is fruity with lots of citrus (oranges, mandarin, grapefruit). Taste is fruity and flowery with citrus and a nice, fresh hoppy finish. Light to medium body. Easy to drink and refreshing.

Cask gravity at The George, Bethersden. Copper colour with off white head. Well balanced aroma of earthy hop and caramel malt. Reasonably juicy in mouth with a good hoppy finish that errs on the earthy citrus side. Good balance of flavours

Foxy orange, hazy: good, fluffy off-white head. Bananaester, apple & solvent, fruity & estery, point of sourness already in the nose. Rather raw, near adstringent MF, priming on the taste per se, which is acidic, very carbonated, with a peppery finish. Esters are there, but the MF really dominates everything. In the aftertaste, again solvent. Way too aggressive beer. The "full bodied soft finish " from the commercial description is, aptly, humbug!

Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Black colour (no surprise). Aroma of raisins, cigarbox and coffee. Surprisingly fruity flavour for a stout (=surprising if I hadn’t read the IBF programme), dark fruits on a background of espresso coffee and dusty roasted malts. Interesting beer!
