Bottled (from beerplanet.eu). Ambery brown colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is dark dry fruits, some toffee, mild roasted notes as well as quite wooden notes. Flavour is roasted malts, some toffee, roasted notes, mild metal as well as wood and some caramel. Actually old ale is a quite good categorization for this Belgian beer...

33cl Bottle, thanks Harmen! ABV 6.8%. Clear brown colour, disappearing fizzy off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, berries, light tart, chocolate, malts. Flavour is light sour, dark fruits, malts, oxidization, light spicy, sour finish. Light to medium bodied, fizzy carbonation. Infected? Or intended as a Flemish red ale?

33cl Bottle, brought back from the brewery, thanks Harmen! Light hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma of fruity esters, bit of green apple, light spicy, light sour. Flavour is sweet, fruity, light spicy, but also a sour note I don’t like. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Bottled 33cl (Beer Planet, BB 09/2010)
Hazy orange color, small white head. Orange peels, spices and yeast in the nose. Crisp carbonation. Orange peels, apricot, sweetish, a bit alcoholic and grainy. Decent.
Earlier Rating: 2/17/2005 Total Score: 3.5
Bottled, alc. 6.3% (BB 12/2005)
Golden yellow, good white head. Fruity, sweetish and yeasty nose. Also some dry hops found - similar to some Czech pilseners. Perfectly carbonated refreshing mouthfeel. Citric, grassy hoppy, finishing with sweet maltyness, moderate oily bitterness in the aftertaste. Very enjoyable and refreshing blonde.

Bottled 330ml alc. 6.8% (Beer Planet, BB ?)
Dark nut brown color, small beige head. Aroma of raisins, dark malts, slight oxidation (balsamico). Medium-bodied. Caramelly with some malty and sherryish notes. Lingering sweetness in the aftertaste. I could guess that this is an aged bottle, and nice one.
Earlier Rating: 4/24/2005 Total Score: 3.7

Dark port ruby, creamy tanned head, lace. Fruity, woody, yeasty nose. Medium-bodied, sticky sweetish mouthfeel. Dry aftertaste, alcohol warms in the finish. Well-balanced, well-made brune.

Bottled 330ml "Malmedy Black" (Beer Planet, BB 11/2011)
Almost opaque dark brown color, thick creamy beige head. Nose has some lemony hoppyness, fruits and malts, but it is quite faint aroma in this beer. Medium-bodied, palate is even watery. Light coffeish notes, berries (strawberry), malts and milk. Finish is a bit lactosy like in some milk stout. Interesting Belgian, but could be more powerful.

Imported from my RateBeer account as Bellevaux Black (by Brasserie de Bellevaux):
Aroma: 7/10, Appearance: 4/5, Taste: 7/10, Palate: 4/5, Overall: 14/20, MyTotalScore: 3.6/5
Note: the Cuvée Spéciale is being seen as an aliassed beer, so at the bottom my rating for that one.
23/08/2010 - 33cl @ home
Pours a very darkbrown beer (I wouldn't say black though) with fine light beige and creamy head. Aroma is coffee, burned caramel, chocolate and some smoke. Taste is sweet (sweeter than you would've guessed from the aroma) with caramel and dark chocolate. Aftertaste is mocha with some sour at the back of the tongue.

Bottle from Beer Planet. Jet black pour with a beige head which dissipates slowly. Aromas of chocolate, licorice, coconut(?), brown sugar, some coffee notes. Sweet ’n’ spicy flavours of coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, vanilla. Sweet and hoppy finish. Very dry in the aftertaste. Nice.
