Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy brown color ale with a super large foamy head with perfect retention and lacing. Aroma of spicy yeast and sweet malt with some alcohol ester easily detectable. Taste is also dominated by some spicy yeast with notes of sugar and loads of alcohol ester. Body is full with perfect carbonation but alcohol is way too detectable and ruin this one for me.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Dark reddish brown beer with a minimal off-white head after a vigorous pour. Not a very good sign. Aroma is almost sour ale like, reminded me of Liefmans Goudenband, which I guess is not supposed to be like that. Infected? I guess not, the beer is still clear. Vinous, alcoholic nose, some wood and red fruits. Flavour is sour, wood, coriander, sour drying finish. When the beer warms up the spices like cardamom and coriander are more pronounced in both aroma and flavour, and the beer gets a bit sweeter, but the sour flavour remains, albeit less. Will definitely try again, but for now not really my kind of brew. 6 3 5 3 10. Re-rate: Free bottle from De Bierkoning, this one almost exploded upon opening, with great effort I managed to save half of the contents. Aroma is way more spice than the first bottle, lots of fresh lemony ginger and cardamom, a bit of alcohol. Flavour is spicy, ginger, cardamom, lots of dark malts, sour and light bitter finish. Bottled. An unclear light golden beer with a huge yellowish head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coriander and other spices, and so is the flavor, leading to a dry wheaty finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Cloudy golden yellow colour, white head. Strong floral and fruity yeast aroma with some hops. Flavour is yeasty, a bit fruity, dry mouthfeel, with a yeasty and malty bitter finish. Gets better when it warms up, gains more depth and spiciness. Nice strong ale, but not exceptional.

Very small, off-white head shortlived over hazy orange-ochre beer. Mix of creamy and sharp-alcoholic aromas. Breton pancakes, Tarte Tatin, Crêpes Suzette or Grand Opéra - very special associations. Definitely apples, alcohol and Calvados in the flavour. Bakery crust & caramel syrup, referring again to Tarte Tatin from the nose. Pinch of sweetness, but nowhere exaggerated. Mandarine peel retronasal, and there we have the crêpes association! MF/palate are rather sharp, the Calvados barrel obliging, but I definitely expect this to mellow out with a bit of bottle-aging. Not overly well-bodied for a beer of its ABV. Again a very special beer from the Alvinne Oak Collection. Glad to see a Belgian brewer resolutely heading in this direction, after Dubuisson, Smisje and Struise... Oh, and a good one for my 1700th Belgian rating!

[33cl bottle] Slightly hazy, reddish amber colour with a big and beige foamy head. Minimal sugary toasted malty aroma with fruity notes of berries, raisins and notes of caramel. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Toast-malty and fruity taste with caramel, nutmeg and light spicy notes. Sweet-bitter, toasty and slightly alcoholic finish. [33cl bottle] Cloudy, deep orange colour with a big frothy white head. Yeasty, moderately sweet malty and orange-/lime-fruity aroma with spicy, peppery hops. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, sparkling taste with fruity esters, getting moderately tart and slightly bitter and floral hoppy towards the finish. Just another nice Tripel [10.I.09].

Bottle on 10/31/2008. Clear deep amber brown body wtih ruby highlights and a medium creamy yellowish tan head. Sweet ginger and spice aroma with molassas, rum-soaked fruit, and hints of sour. Big ginger, spice, rum-soaked fruit, caramel and ligth sour flavor. Medium body with fizzy carbonation.

Bottle from Wine Warehouse - Charlottesville on 10/22/2008. Chunky golden amber body with a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet caramel and winey aroma with lots of candi sugar. More sweet caramel flavor, some spice, somewhat sharp sugary hints and fairly spicy notes. Medium body with moderate carbonation that’s fairly prickly.

33cl bottle from Dranken Geers. Hazy amber, some floaters, lasting thick beige head. Belgian yeast syrupy malt and hoppy aroma. Raisiny juicy sultana fruity aroma dominates. Reasonably smooth in the mouth, good smooth fruit and then really very hoppy on the finish for a Belgian beer. For an 11% beer, the alcohol isn’t obvious at all. Aroma gets a 7, interesting yeast character, appearance only a 2, the flavour is amazingly smooth. Seems to be a very settled beer. But the best thing is the palate and the finish. Silky smooth on the swallow with some fine carbonation and then this biting stinging hop that just sings beautifully on the end. Really interesting characterful beer with an amazingly good mouthfeel and I cannot speak highly enough of that hoppy finish. Tastes dry hopped in the bottle if that was possible.
