Description
Pucker Up & Join the Sour Revolution

Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

Can. A- Mild ginger, lime. A- Ruby red color, clear liquid, no head. T- Blueberry jam, mild heat, mild ginger. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly spicy finish. O- Likely my last ever Cascade, picked up just before the announcement. Bummer. A rush of chilies upfront, but not spicy. Definitely a touch of flavorful heat followed by a sudden zing of ginger and a touch of tart lime zest. Afterwards, a slowly built and lingering sweet blueberry jam. This was an absolute journey start to finish. Each ingredient got to be the star for a brief moment. Not my favorite profile but very well made. Unique. Cheers to Cascade.

Knightly in Orlando was closing out of old sours, bought a 2016 750 for $2. Mojito glass at home. Clear raspberry iced-tea colored brew, quick to fall soda head. Astringent cherry berry, lightly vinegerized, sharp nose with a hint sweet tobacco & pleasant oxidation. Good start but a touch simple here. Taste is very sharp cherries over a tart blueberry foundation. Mellow oxidation masquerading as tobacco earthiness again. Surprised by the amount of fruit still evident. Some decent floral funk & more prominent vinegar sourness creep & continues to creep in on the tail. Berry skin astringency, slight chem & Sourhead pucker stamp any lingering memories till my tongue gets numb. Carbonation is as strong as ever. Very cool that this bottle was still way drinkable. It's not nearly as good as the raspberry or noir but it is still pretty nice.

Wunderbar!

Notes from May 2010 One of many bottles sent to me by Batman & Robin while I was incapacitated at home. Thanks guys. Into my Ommegang Anniversary glass. A turbid, rusty brown color. Just a bit of greasy sheen on the airy, low-clinging, khaki-ish colored head. Smell is a mix of soaking wood chips, red wine vinegar, & pickle juice. Somewhat medicinal. It could of been better. The fruit was there, but besides some pits & skins, it wasn't the dominate smell. It tasted like it spent too long in the barrel. More tannins then even some harsher red wines I've had. Incredibly oaky. Too much oak really. Lemons. Very tart, edgy lemons. Grape/cherry/apple skins. It tasted like cherries too, yes. Throat clenching, acidic cherries. A sweet & sour mix, mostly focusing on the briny, sour bitterness, & not so much on any ripe fruit that I was hoping for. Feel was all wood. Dry to the point you need a lager chaser. Carbonation was pretty sturdy, but it didn't need much to cut the muddy body. I guess I was expecting something juicier. Dry, tart, & sour is good combination at times, but all the puckering made my enjoyment of it minimal. Though once it became warmer & fell a bit flat, it was actually somewhat easier to enjoy.

Can from Total Wine in Vacaville, CA. Pours the color of watermelon juice. Aroma is mixed but raspberry is detectable. Not quite med body. It's dry and sourish - a bit tart. Wood notes. Flavor is quite complex. Another good one from Cascade.
