Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

A taster shared with Josh, Matt, Phill, and Ryan during FHF with priceless Rachel's (yup, again!) help in organizing all the mess with glasses. Appearance: hazy peachy with a white head. Aroma: fruity, oak, bugs. Taste: same, a bit acidic, but less than usual. Overall: good.

A taster shared with Josh, Matt, Phill, and Ryan during FHF with priceless Rachel's (yup, again!) help in organizing all the mess with glasses. Appearance: cloudy purple with a white head. Aroma: a lot of American oak, berries. Taste: same, very acidic in a Cascade way of things. Overall: too sour as usual.

500mL bottled 2020 drunk 8/11/23. Clear, marigold-to-brass. Small, off-white head, instantly to nothing. Nose is a bit mousey, earthy, weird, probably the vanilla and such. Some peach skin, pedio, moderate-to-heavy lactic acidity emerges. Touch of vanilla-like oxidation. But it opens up much better and after a long breathing/warming, the vanilla is sweet, succulent and leads to peach, bright bourbon and light white wine. No booze. Soft, malty, good oak character with moderate peach, lots of lactic but no acetic or brett. Leathery, with lots of vanilla from both barrel, oxdidation and actual bean. Clean, though, soft, sweet, succulent, sour. Very nice and just gets better and better as it sits and warms. Bourbon is spicy and drying, not overdone.

Bottle, gift from Pam. Hazy deep golden body with no head. Steady carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of orange zest, honey and a hint of bourbon. Flavour of red grape and nectarine with a sour lemon finish. Medium body with a spritzy texture. Very fizzy. It’s complex bit too sharp/acidic for me to love it.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 11 Mar 2023) Dark red colour with brief, beige head. Fruity, sourish nose with notes of cherries, red fruit and almonds. Fruity, tart taste with cherries, almonds, red fruit, oak wood, brown sugar and a low bitterness in a tart finish. More than medium body, with a slight caramel sweetness. Tasty, well balanced and elegant. Good Flemish red character with lots of sour cherries. Very nice.
