Description
Pucker Up & Join the Sour Revolution
Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

corked and caged bottle, 2018, tasted apr 4 2024 pours chestnut brown with a small white to offwhite head. Aroma is sour and slightly malty - it fits totally in the sour belgian bruin category for me, was I blind tasting I would place the beer definetly from belgium, as a sour bruin, one of the finer ones. the sourness (vinagre salad dressing sour) is toned by several finer complexity adding notes like wood, bourbon wood, roasted malts. all notes I can find could be brewing-process derived rather than just fruit and stuff added. great aroma almost a 9. much closer to 8.5 than 8. Flavor has some notes from the added yuzu and perhaps also the pepper, base beer seem to be seriously sour, also seems to lack a little bit of yeasty body, compared to the belgians. very decent sour with lots of complexity to explore. The alc.% is fitting and not spoiling anything, good collaboration, has kept very well the 6 years since botteling, could keep for years more I think.

8 years old cork top bottle, 0.75l, shared with Leo & Dasa. Aroma is vinous, funky, citrusy and floral with berries’ note. Pours hazy orange brown color with thin creamy off-white head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts tart and funky vinous with cranberry and acidic note, following is grainy with tannins and cinnamon, while mouthfeel is quite smooth. Medium to full body, slick texture and lively carbonation in palate. Another gem…

Bottle, gift from Dad. Hazy brown body with ruby highlights and no head. No visible carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of cranberry, raisin and red wine. Flavour of red wine and bitter lemon. Thin body with a slick texture. Light fizz. This is very sour and intense; I hoped it would be a bit more soft and nuanced. The ABV is well hidden.

On tap at Brew'd Craft Pub, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Nose is full of coriander and basil upfront, with some grapefruit rind and sea salt. Flavour is pungent on the basil upfront, followed by coriander, sea salt, and citrus zest. Dry, salty and extremely herbal — they certainly used a lot of basil here. Pretty good stuff.
