Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

750 ml bottle from John’s Market Place. ($16.99) Nose of grapes, oak, and tart green apples. Clear copper with a medium, off white, glass lacing head. Flavor is pepperiness, tartness, a touch of sherry, and spiciness. Excellent!

Bottle. Ruby-brown beer with a nice light tan head. Cherry aroma with mustiness and tartness. Tart/sour flavor with cherry and earthy malt. Medium bodied. Tart/sourness lingers with a nice cherry note. Great beer with good sour/cherry balance and a little richness from the port barrels thrown in.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours a rather copper color with a beige head that didn’t last long. Interesting but almost indescribable aromas. There’s fruit, kandi and spice. There’s a lot more too. Seems a bit sourish. Flavor is sour all right. There’s citrus, and prune, and spice. The sour is not so much barnyard as fruit sour. Seems to be some chocolate in the finish. It’s really good stuff, just pretty complicated. Finishes with touches of chocolate and brett. Wow. Body is rather full, and the carbonation is light and prickly.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed to murky amber golden body with a fluffy off-white head that stays a while and leaves good lace. Aroma is faint, albeit with perfumey notes, port, barrel character, light vinous funk, caramel and chocolate undertones. Taste is rich up front with dark fruits and chocolate like a Quad, followed by an oaken barrel noted middle, with cherry and a slight meatiness, with a very lactic and raisiny finish. Nice and complex. Light bubbles and a soft mouthfeel.
