1 February 2020. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, Kevin, Niels & Cynthia! Clear golden, lasting, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of pure absinthe, 'pastis', aniseed, liquorice, vague apricot. Taste has pure aniseed, a bit fruity & doughy but overly spicy, sweet & spicy liquorice in essence; spicy finish, yeasty, vaguely hoppy, expected warming absinthe alcohol. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. This is way too much for me - sorry Rudy!

330 ml bottle, from Det Bette Ølhus, Aalbæk. ABV is 12%. Nearly black colour, moderate beige head. Aroma of malts, caramel, mild spices, dark dried fruits and brown kandij sugar syrup. The flavour has the same elements, but is not too sweet. Also notes of brown bread / dark rye bread. Moderate hops. Not as alcoholic as expected, good beer. .

Friday 1st Feb 2019; 7th Pre-Brugge Bier Festival International Beer Swap, De Bierboom. This is one of the many bottles that landed on my table for me to try, it is OK to take a decent sized sample (within reason) because there are so many beers to share. Last beer of the night! Rudy, who owns 'De Bierboom' is one of the 'Vier Monniken' (the Four Monks) and he poured my sample from a large bottle. What a lovely nightcap! Almost black in colour, wispy beige head. Boozy and malty with vanilla and chocolate in both the nose and flavour. Some dark fruits in the flavours too, rich and slick body; viscous and very drinkable for such a strong brew.

3 February 2019. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke & Pieter! Cloudy black with a big, slowly thinning, yellowis beige head; some lacing. Inviting aroma of toast, blackcurrant, fondant, black pepper, roasted peanut, salted caramel, dried fig, raisin, coffee liqueur, black olive. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite nutty (peanut, walnut), fruity hints of fig & raisin, chocolate & vague caramel; light to medium roasted bitter middle turns that chocolate character into a firm fondant core, with elements of pure roasted malt, toast & espresso, and a slight accent of spicy black pepper & umami black olive in the back. Dry, toasty, bit peppery hoppy finish, lingering fondant & espresso and subtle, warming coffee liqueur alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft to flat carbonation. Big & bold Stout with sufficient (roasted) bitterness, only hampered by a palate that is a tad too smooth. Otherwise very enjoyable, I like it. Cheers, Rudy!
