Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.
Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).
In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Cloudy yellow, with a small head. Smells slightly clovey and banana, and tastes pretty much the same. Has absolutely no originality or distinguishing characteristics.

I approached this beer with some trepidation as I have not been in general a fan of this style. However I was pleasantly surprised. +++ It came12 oz brown bottle with artwork typical for the Boston Beer Company. It pours an opaque dark red-brown color with a small tan head. The aroma is sweet and malty with just a trace of hops. The flavor is just like the scent, which I consider to be a good thing.

Bottled. Interesting. It’s definitely different, so is the difference good? Pours a deep brown under a fluffy but transient tan head with dark flecks. Smell is rather subdued, slightly bitter for a bock, with Droeste cocoa highlights. Taste is fine, perhaps a little too much coffee roast. Probably should have been a little less bitter to work better with the chocolate. • New tasting, Mar ’06: Y’know what? This is "Smores" beer!

For a light Summer ale this one is fairly pleasant.+++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a cloudy tan-orange color with a small white head that left decent lacing. The aroma is sweet citrus and perfume. The flavor is dry and lemony with a bit of vague spice. Dry spice flavor on the finish. The wheat is hard to detect. The mouthfeel shows definite overcarbonation. Pleasant but unassuming.

Slightly hazy amber/honey coloured body with a nice dense slightly off-white head. Aroma of corn, wheat, curacao, coriander seed and some spices. Light-bodied; Spicey wheatie taste with some light citrus fruit noticeable, but not much. Aftertaste clean and subtle-the larger tastes are up front. Overall, a decent beer to have readily available no matter where you are in the States! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle from a six-pack purchased by Phil (haddon90). Thanks again Phil! I sampled this on 25-May-2004.

AOBF 2004 Draught. Probably my second or third favorite at the festival. Pours a deep peach/apricot orange with some light rusty brown hues on the edges. Small yellow-beige head, moderately hazy. Aroma of rich sweet yellow fruits, caramel, wheat and yeast. Flavor is immediately intense. Sweet, succulent caramel and wheat, with a balancing sharpness coming from the big fruit esters. The yeast apparency, which is like a mix between sour german yeast and belgian yeast adds a very unique element to this beer. Towards the end, it dries out a bit and gets very creamy with some vanilla cream flavors making their way in. Finish is pretty quick and clean, surprisingly, with lots of apple-like flavor and almost a cidery feel to it. I really enjoyed the mix of fruit, yeast, wheat and malt at the start. Even though it is a bit too sweet, I thought the flavor was very interesting. Body is full, tending to medium on the finish.

Another decent seasonal from Sam Adams. This beer is a reddish-mahogany color with a medium thin tan head that disappeared slowly. Quick lacing. The aroma is malty with a slight smoke character. Smooth and rich body with a big malt profile, along with caramel, chocolate and hops. There is also a creeping alcohol presence. The finish is very sweet malt and molasses. Not a world class Doppelbock but a nice full and easy to drink beer.

A mediocre wit but pleasant none the less. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a cloudy bronze color with a small white head. There is a mild scent of wheat, citrus and spice. The flavor is dominated by the wheat with a light mustiness and hints of citrus, honey and faint spices. Mustiness, citrus and honey linger on the finish.

Hefty price tag on this one but it is a pretty good beer. Pours a dark brown color with a nice ruby glow. Medium thick beige head that lasted a little while, and thin lacing. The aroma is chocolate of course, with a roasted character to it. Medium body with a lot of chocolate in the flavor but it doesn’t become annoying. Malt and roasted coffee are present here and there too. The finish reminded me of a brown cow, which is like a Boston Cooler (root beer blended with ice cream) but with chocolate ice cream. I think you are paying a premium on the packaging on this one, but it works as a one-off for me.

Beautiful amber color. Quite good, mainly characterized by the caramel, with a more clear hoppy note in the aroma and a bold final, but a bit too metallic.
