Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.
Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).
In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Bottled. Brownish amber with rich, creamy head. Flowery toffee aroma. Sweet, medium boided. Short mouthfeel, weak malt structure. Fruity with motes of plums. Some salty bitterness.

Much better than I remember - decent hoppiness - buttery - respectable malt backbone - my go-to beer at places like applebees or fridays.

This is a decent sweet stout, actually - respectable apearance, dark coffee aroma and flavor, with a moderate helping of roasted oats - surprising.

Dark amber, slight ruby, initially large head that shrinks quickly, leaving a tiny lacing - aroma of cinnamon and caramel - flavor has some of the same, as well as a very cookie/toasty kind of flavor - some chocolate - toasty finish with lingering malts - a pleasant surprise.

Lambic? Most certainly not. It's almost not even a fruit beer. Light, mildly tart, very thin bodied, watery palate, slight wheat taste - something in this tastes like cough syrup mixed with play doh. I must agree with hopscotch, it's almost a crime to market this as a lambic.

Dark amber/copper color, with decent lacing and a mildly fruity aroma - this doesn't taste much like a weizen bock, but it is pretty tasty none-the-less - slight sweetness, with a mild fruit flavor, which makes way for some wheaty, grainy flavors - bit of hops in the finish, with some malt to balance it out fairly well.

Draft, Dec 04 This seasonal is a bit more widely available in Chicago this year; I had this at the Cheeseburger in Paradise, Downers Grove, where, WARNING: they serve drafts in an inced-over mug. Still, the cold brings out a bit of spiceniess, probably from the hop bill. Good doughy, deep, dark roast malts amid the floating chunks of ice. My impression of this is much improved from last year.
Draft, Nov 03 Good half-inch head over a coppery body. But not a lot of smell. Maltiness is pleasant without having too much actual taste, though, just a little bit crystal. I had not pegged this for a wheat. Couldn't peg any kind of hop profile. Leaves a decent enough malty aftertaste.

Thanks to Darkover for this one. This was actually a little better than I was expecting. Dark brown but not opaque with a medium thick and creamy beige head. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma is roasted coffee and is slightly smoky. Medium-bodied and creamy with a nice mix of coffee, chocolate and caramel in the flavor. It is a little on the carbonated side unfortunately. The finish is mostly bitter with coffee and hops. Overall this is an admirable attempt at the style by Sam Adams.

Bottle # 2421/3000. OK, so it was at this point in the evening that everybody realized what a crazy, yet generous, guy thedm was. What a beautiful box and bottle this beer came in. The surprise of the night, and the third leg of our Sam Adams journey. Poured like dark apple cider, cloudy and full of sediment. Very few bubbles. Aroma was strong alcohol, musty earthiness, vinous and touched by tequila (with or without a worm, I'm not sure). A very sweet, malty beer with woodiness, licorice, smoke, and whiskey (did somebody mention Southern Comfort? That set me back a bit...). Tamer mouthfeel and much more refined than the Triple Bock, although I still think this beer is a bit too sweet. Warming. Many thanks to thedm for pulling out this surprise!

The second leg of our triple-legged Sam Adams journey. Thanks to thedm for providing this rather pricey beverage. Dirty copper appearance, and I did see a few bubbles! Aroma was whiskey-in-the-jarro, or, as I was told by connoisseurs of the hard stuff, tequila. I hate both. Also some vinousness and musty earthiness. Flavor was sweet with vanilla and maple syrup dominating the palate. Heavy alcohol too. Each swallow brought a quick chase of water (like I said, I'm not a liquor fan). Overall, this was too heavy on the alcohol, although I suppose that is part of its uniqueness. Not nearly as syrupy as the Triple Bock. Warms the belly, this here slow sipper!
