Description
Our passion for never settling, and brewing quality, flavorful beers started with our founder, Jim Koch. He brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in his kitchen – a recipe that belonged to his great great grandfather that he found in his father’s attic back in the early 1980’s. The Boston Beer Company has grown through the years to become the fourth largest brewery in the United States.

Initially, Koch rented excess capacity and brewed the beer at the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. As sales increased Koch developed other contract arrangements at various brewing facilities with excess capacity. To reduce reliance on contract brewing Cincinnati's Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery was purchased in early 1997).

In 2007, the Boston Beer Company purchased the former F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company brewery in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. By 2012, the Company was producing two-thirds of all its beer at the Breinigsville facility, and it has increased brewing capacity there. The Boston Beer Company also has a small R&D brewery located in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, where public tours and beer tastings are offered.

Very light aroma. Good body, smooth, quite strong coffee and roasted malt taste, somehow 'raw'. Palate with strong coffee character and a light sourness.

Amber coloured. Flowery aroma, medium body, crystal malt character. For a long time this was the only decent American beer I'd tried, as it was the only one available.

Confusing description: given a German name, made with Bavarian yeast, but otherwise called an American version. Pale yellow-gold color, moderately cloudy, with med quickly fading head. Aroma is mild, with some clove and spicy hop notes, and maybe only the slightest hint of banana. Flavor is mild, slightly tangy. Slightly zesty, moderate clove notes, but otherwise clean and light. Strange, bitter almost astringent chemically aftertaste that lingered for a long time. Addendum: I tried this in a different glass and it became a different animal altogether, more yeast effects, and cleaner finish. Good example of the right glass for the right beer (btw, I had used a chalice for the first tasting, and a tall glass for the second).

Cloudy yellow color with nice medium head. Spicy, floral, mildly fruity aroma, with clean malts and mildly spicy notes (hops or coriander?) in the flavor. Refreshing, yet bland. Give me a maibock in spring, not Koelsch.

fresh 2011: Bright fiery-amber brown and flat. The aroma is mapley and woody. Sweet with alcohol tingle, and the maple emerges later to make a contribution to the finish.

oxidized 2011: Muddy amber and flat. Mapley aroma with alcohol. Rich caramels. Soft and sticky. Rich malts and dates and maple with lots of alcohol tingling the tongue. Finishes sweet and with hints of wood and alcohol. 7-3-7-3-15

old 2002 rating: Fiery amber, still; Firm, alcoholic aroma w/ vanilla, bourbon, malt, nuts. Notably phenolic palate is sweet, very mapley, with a bracing slap of alcohol. Very smooth, oily palate; sweet, liqeurish finish. Big time dessert beer - tastes like it was brewed with maple sap instead of water.

Copper-coloured, OK head. Full-bodied. Thick, oily hop-flavour. Very bitter. I like hoppy, bitter beers.

I really wish this one was available year round, as it is Sammy's best offering, edging out the Winter Lager. I really had trouble placing the aroma, it was kind of like toasted wheat bread with a hint of orange. The color was rich and so was the taste. Refreshingly complex.

Let me start off by saying I like cranberries. Cranberry bread, cranberry muffins...but not cranberry beer. The aroma was interesting but I barely finished the bottle, and had to drink it in short doses to get through. Just not my thing I guess.

Amber. Sweet, hop dominated, rather malty, bitter. A little one-dimensional perhaps.

A little light on flavor considering the great aroma and autumn color. Not Sammy's best offering by any means but I actually like this more than their flagship beer. It is not as good as their Summer or Winter brews though.
