Um 1271 braute man im Spital das Bier aus Gerste und Hafer, ging aber bereits im 14. Jahrhundert, zur Zeit Ludwigs des Bayern, zur alleinigen Verwendung von Gerste, Hopfen und Wasser über - so ist es aus den alten Schriften zu lesen.
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beriet das Aufsichtsgremium des Katharinenspitals, der Spitalrat, die Verlegung und Erweiterung der Spitalbrauerei. Das Spital erwarb den Schambeck´schen Keller in Steinweg sowie später noch zusätzlich zur Verlagerung von Brauhaus und Wirtschaft das Strasser´schen Bräuhaus in Stadtamhof mit dem zugehörigen Sommerbierkeller in Steinweg - der heutigen Spitalgaststätte "Spitalkeller".
Die komplette Verlegung der Brauerei wurde schlussendlich nicht durchgeführt; stattdessen erfolgte auf dem heutigen Gelände ein zusätzlicher Neubau. Eine kleine, alte, sture Brauerei an der Donau...

Bottle. Pours hazy straw with stable white head. Clear aroma of grain, yeast and banana. Sweetish flavour of malt and yeast, with notes of banana and touches of hops and grain. Sourish, grainy aftertaste. Slightly acidic and estery aftertaste. Okay.

Bottle, 5.2% as Spital Weizen. Citric and yeasty aroma, lots of banana. Cloudy greyish yellow colour. Big stable white head. The flavour has a lot of banana and a weak burnt plastic note. Then comes some lemon peel and a good yeasty note, like quite fresh white bread. Refreshing and quite clean.

(bottle) Cloudy, chestnut-brown colour with a medium-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Mildly yeasty, malty aroma with notes of caramel, rye bread, traces of chocolate, as well as a present fruity counterpart, including hints of banana and dark berries. Moderately sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium to full bodied with a well-carbonated, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Caramel- and rye-malty start with bready and slightly yeast-spicy accents, followed by fruity notes of banana, berries, also some candied fruits; sweet and delicately bitter finish with lingering fruity notes and a tinge of caramel. Finally a tad on the sweet side but nevertheless a likeable brew. 22.IV.16

Eher malziger als hopfiger Antrunk. Dunkel, muffig alkoholisch. Geringe Herbe, trocken süßlich. Langer Nachgeschmack, weiter dumpf hopfig. 8/8/9/8/7/7

Klares bernsteinfarbenes Bier mit einer geringen weißen Schaumkrone. Geruch leicht zitronig, leicht hopfig. Geschmack trocken hopfig, zitronig hopfig, nett!

Bottle 500ml. @ home. [ As Spital Weizen Leicht ].Clear medium orange yellow color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is light moderate malty, grain, wheat, light caramel, moderate yeasty. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration, caramel, wheat, banana - fruity yeasty. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20160315]

50cl bottle. Trübes dunkel orange goldenes Bier mit einer mittelgroßen beigen Schaumkrone. Geruch hefig, viel Nelke. Geschmack sehr malzig, getreidig, süß, hefig, Gewürznelken.
