Hanssens Artisanaal
Microbrewery
in Dworp,
Flemish Brabant,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Hanssens Artisanaal
Established in 1871
Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

bottle labelled Hanssens Artisanal sinds 1896 Schararbeekse Kriek corked and caged 37.5cl bottle 6.5% dark red, not clear red, pink head. aroma is belgian sour lambic and cherries. Super clean belgian lambic aroma and then fruity natural cherries. This is an exceptionally good aroma, perhaps some faint phenolic notes otherwise just perfect. quite clean and simple. flavor is crazy sour, damped by a lot of cherry flavor. Not sweet, sour beer, sour cherries, You def. need to be into sour beer before being able to appreciate this one, but wow, it's good. I think we need to invent a new word to describe the level of sourness of this beer.

Bottle. Pours red with basically no head. Aroma is complex cherry, rich and fruity, light funk, vinous with an umami bite. Medium body. Light sweetness, intense acidity and light funk. Rich and with lots of cherry, umami, vinous. Lovely. The Schaerbeekse kriek is slightly more acidic, and has that special note, but this is just as good.

Bottle 37.5cl, from 2018. Pours a dark ruby red, no head. Aroma is very intense sour cherries, refreshing and fruity, light spices, vinous, deep with some funk and some umami. Light oak and vanilla. Light to medium body. Flavour is very tart and sour, a real punch of acidity. But underneath is a beautifully complex sour cherry character, rich if not sweet, with a bite and some funk, umami, oak. Amazing stuff.

75cl bottle, vintage December 2016, 6% alcohol. Beautiful ruby color, with basically no head. Aroma of sour cherries, still quite clear after more than 4 years. Lactic acid. Taste of sour cherries, amazing, wood, vinous. Definitely acid, wonderful kriek. Hanssens once again was great.
