Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

An awesome extra from kkearn. I recently got to try this at a tasting thanks to theisti at a gathering, I enjoyed my small sample and wanted more. So I throw it on my want list and in my next trade Keith throws it in as an extra, what awesome synergy. It pours with a small, tan, short lived head, which sits atop a black body. Aroma is strong with dark, very dry and ashy, prune-y, alcoholic dark cereal. Taste has a bit more chocolate in it but still a very dry ash flavor. Plenty of sweet alcoholic prune with licorice and light astringent flavors. And then this incredibly dry roast finish, just sucks up all the moisture in my mouth. Not too heavy, a medium body with barely any residual sugars left over. Way different mouthfeel for an Impy Stout. It’s actually a weird imperial stout, so dry and ashy, its almost unbelievable, yet its really accessible.
22oz bottle, New Belgium rounded goblet glass.

12oz bottle-pours a thin white head and gold color. Aroma is grainy/bready, some spice hops, yeast. Taste is sweet grain, secondary spice/metallic hops that seems out of place and clashes. Thanks decaturstevo for picking this out.

12oz bottle-pours a light tan head and amber color. Aroma is light/medium malt-some almost caramel, medium fruit, slight musty. Taste is medium malt-caramel/toffee, secondary spice/herbal hops, some wood. Could be an Oktoberfest or Bock style lager. Thanks decaturstevo for picking this out.

Sampled at the Knoxville 2008 Brewer’s Jam. Deep copper with a small fleeting head. Not much aroma here. Just not much flavor either - nothing good, nothing bad. Disappointing.

Bottle Knoxville Brewer’s Jam. Deep amber/orange body that supports a long lasting off-white head. Light malt aroma. Toasty. A light bitterness on the front end quickly fades to a velvety dryness. Good body.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Suttree. Pour is hazed black, with a tan smallish head. Aroma of roast dark chocolate, coffee, thick sweet maltiness, and a touch of soy. Taste of milky roasted espresso coffee maltiness. Under the coffee notes is some fruit sweetness, dates and plums. The finish was unusual, chalky and dry, yet quite sweet. Palate is medium heavy, silky and mouth coating. Thanks for sending this my way, Phil.
