Description
The unique eight-sailed windmill at Heckington near Sleaford in Lincolnshire is the sole survivor of only seven of the type ever built in Britain. Heckington’s eight-sailed windmill owes its survival to John Pocklington (1865-1941) who combined the machinery from Skirbeck with the tower at Heckington in 1892. He kept the mill in working order even when it became obsolete and was commended by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for his restoration of 1933. Kesteven County Council (later absorbed into Lincolnshire County Council) purchased the mill in 1953 and the building has been administered by the Friends of Heckington Mill since 1982.

Tony Pygott set up the six barrel brewery in the adjacent former grainstore in June 2010 and the first brew took place on 22nd June. Having built up a distribution network, 8 Sail Brewery cask and bottled-conditioned beers can be found in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and further afield.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml: poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 5th Dec 13. Dark brown body, with a red hue: the head a lightly tanned foam. Malts all the way here: chocolate, coffee and liquorice notes in both the aroma and taste. Smooth and full bodied, an easy drinking Winter brew that hasn’t been over spiced like so many others in the UK.

500ml Bottle conditioned: BBD Apr 14, poured carefully into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 3rd Dec 13. Lovely dark body, deep ruby red really, but you don’t want me to repeat what’s on the labels do you? The head was a full beige covering of foam, lasted OK. Your best mates Home Brew sometimes smells like this: yeasty, slightly vinegary, yet interesting with reservations: you want to be friends at the end of the evening, so you just nod and say very little. The taste was also ’Home Brewish’ in it’s basic flavouring: Mild, yes, flavoursome, no. It reminded me of failed attempts at classic British styles I tried to brew 30 years ago. I don’t want to be unkind here, but this didn’t ’float my boat’ or ’fill my sails’ with love. I’ve got another five or six of their beers to try and a brewery T’Shirt to wear, so I hope the other brews improve somewhat.

Light haze on this deep amber beer. Tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is slightly soft and dry. Fine carbonation. Light malt with a little cream. Little dried fruits. Then startling flavours of estery cognac and rum! No alcohol heat but the flavours are quite distinct. Finishes semi dry. Not at all unpleasant but really quite odd.

Hazy amber beer with a small pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth with fine minerally carbonation. Smooth malt with a whisper of cream. Nicely balanced hops. Orange and orange marmalade. Touch of lemon and floral notes. Finishes smooth. Well joined up and pretty drinkable.

Bottle from the St Alban Beer Festival. I wouldn’t have opened this if I has realised it was so under rated. Aroma is huge brett frunk! Couldn’t quite believe it. Aroma also has tangerine, peppery hop. Hazed orange Lively off white head that lasts well. Flavour has a big orval character, with some esters and tangerine. Solid rough bitternees. Palate is lively and creamy and some velvet. This stuff is rad. What an awesome surprise. As close to Orval as you can get from an english brewery.

Hand-pulled pint in The Malcolm Arms, Anton’s Gowt, a small hamlet in Lincolnshire on 29 Mar 2013. Dark amber/ruby red with a slight haze: a rich tan coloured head sat on top. Malts rule the flavours: semi-sweet molasses in both the nose and taste: no bitter finish to speak of, the malts completely ruling the whole drinking experience. Not bad, but a bit one dimensional.
