Notes from March 2011 Caught my second wind & decided to have a few pints over dinner @ CBC Sunday night after EBF. Sampled their sake hybrid again as well, & oh man did that stuff just not sit well. I'm sure this IPA didn't go down as pleasantly as it could have as a result. Anyway, standard pint glass, well endowed white head that deflates quickly. Mellow gold, chill-hazed color. Smells like a standard ipa. Large amounts of irritating hedge clippings & rindy notions. Bold & brash, appearing bigger then it really is. A touch earthy, but mostly a leafy citrus. Taste is crisp with bitter greens, clenching pith, & wintergreen mint. Bit of a dry toast character in there, but otherwise, one-sided. Refreshing for the desensitized IPA fan. Difficult for those who still enjoy a more flavorful dry hop. Carbonation is well in line, & the beer is overall pretty dry. Though the alcohol, lower then a standard ipa, seemed to disperse in aerosol form, leaving a Lysol-like residual in my nose & throat. One of the few less then amazing beers I've had from CBC.

Notes from July 2012 Batch 1 bottle from the CBC fridge & into an Ommegang chalice. Almost 8 bucks! Clear, honey/orange body. Second pour had a fair amount of sediment despite settling in the fridge for a while. An inch of off-white soda suds fizz out before it completely settles. Smells of dusty lemon pepper seasoning, yeast, & crackers. Some cider-ish notions as well. Curious bittersweet fruit notes up front. Middle is toasty malt, chalky/uninspired yeast, & lettuce-y bitterness. A subtle heat lingers & grows well past the finish. Black pepper really stands out. Flavors popped better when cold then cool I found. Tired carbonation & boring yeast kept it from being really refreshing. Price is an issue. Better then I remember it being on tap.

Notes from July 2012 Batch 2 bottle direct from the CBC fridge. Consumed 6/12. Dense, flat, plopped down white head. Chill hazed golden amber body. Nose is full of sweet Euro doughiness, straw, mild banana esters, maybe a touch of spice. Not much else. Tates of sweet/syrupy malts, plasticy banana, & a mild spice jar bitterness. Tastes like a sticky/flat, old hef. Okay carbonation, mellow alcohol, but it is still quite thick & rich & lacking. It's not what I want from a tripel. This honestly sucks in bottle format. Or at least when I got a hold of one. A great draft beer.

Brewery draught, 10/2/24. Clear, dark mahogany. Small, light tan head steadily to ring. Cacao, vanilla, coconut and mild bourbon spice with generous malts including light roast. Fruity, not too much so, nor is there too much black licorice or barrel tannin. No booze. Tastes like cacao and coconut. Absolutely love it. Juicy, rich, yet with dark chocolate, moderate bitterness and a bit of dark fruit. Lingering chocolate and more base malt. Rich, malty, with a bit of heft, though no syrup or excess sugar. No alcohol noted. Love the Amburana.

Brewery draught, 9/24/24. Never got around to rating this back in the day and figured, hey, no big deal, I'll just rate the next batch... Well, 8 years later, here's the next batch... Clear, blonde-brass. White head slowly to cover. Pine, florals, nutty, biscuity malts. Some resin, not too much Belgian character. Sweaty. Malty, good depth, with honey and very light toast. A lot softer than expected based on the nose. Floral, grassy, piney, woody, but none of it is acidic or resinous. Lingering honey, still not very Belgian. But a well-adapted DIPA. Nice balance and assertive hops.

Brewery draught, 9/24/24. Clear, bright bronze-copper-maize. Small, white head, slowly to ring. Bit of toast, biscuit, white bread and finally some tropical and citrusy hops. Wood and pine, finally. Clean, not resinous. Soft, expansively carbonated, malty. Tons of yellow fruit, very round and gently sweet. Mild bitterness, spice and lingering very mild pine, floral and wood notes. Nice hybridized IPA.

375mL 2023 bottle drunk 8/19/24. Clear, blonde-flaxen-golden. Large, frothy, well-retained, white head. Rustic grains with tons of stone fruit and light pepper. Some herbal hops and nothing crude from the yeast. Just honeyed grains, pepper and gentle, playful fruit for days. About as good or better than any Belgian golden ale I can remember having in quite a while. Just such a clean yeast character yet it's very aromatic. The wonder continues in the mouth with pepper and herbs from the hops and yeast, followed by bright fruity esters and balancing, honey-like malts that dry out perfectly on the finish. Clean, distinctly Belgian. No crude phenols/esters. No alcohol. A real delight. Gonna miss these guys....
