Description
Since 1988, Gritty's missions have been to craft the best beers possible, serve the very best pub food, and to have way too much fun doing both. For more than 30 years, Gritty's has succeeded in all three (especially the third...just sayin').

From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

12oz bottle pours black with near infra red edges and semi bumpy-frothy mocha head. The aroma is a mix of burnt malts and coffee grounds to go along with mild levels of caramel and vanilla. The taste starts semi vanilla sweet and quickly moves to dark roasted malts and coffee. A burnt malt note rises up and grows into the finish becoming nearly ashy. Into the after taste I’m left with burnt malts and a return of the vanilla note.

Somewhat cloudy golden coloured body with tons of small bubbles, a very thin white head and a light copper coloured tint - decent looking, but nothing spectacular. Aroma of metal, blood, lemons, yeast and a bunch of malt - no hops at all to speak of. Light-bodied; Super mild malt flavour with lemons, rice and a tiny bit of hops that are noticed - definitely not enough to call this any sort of ’pale’. Aftertaste shows cardboard, metal, blood and nothing nice. Overall, a very bad choice for an APA - definitely not worth trying, even if you are looking for a different beer from a different state (maine). I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 08-January-2008.

My friend Matt brought this one to me after a trip to Maine. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a beautiful ruby-caramel color with a medium sized khaki head. The aroma was lightly sweet and malty but rather faint. The flavor was lightly tangy and bitter with only a hint of roastiness and a sour tangy finish. The body was thin and watery. Rather bland.

My friend Matt brought this one to me from a trip to Maine. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma was dry, bitter, roasty and a almost gritty. The flavor was bitter, roasty and dry with a strong expresso element. The body was quite thin and watery. The flavor was spot on for a dry stout but the body was nowhere near.

A golden ale with a thick white head, quickly dissipating. Aroma is strong carmel and butterscotch, with emphasis on butter....In mouth, a sweetish malt comes, with notes of berries, and strong butter in finale. Pleasing at first, cloying at second, dissapointing in final. Bottle from Party Source, Syracuse.
