Description
Since 1988, Gritty's missions have been to craft the best beers possible, serve the very best pub food, and to have way too much fun doing both. For more than 30 years, Gritty's has succeeded in all three (especially the third...just sayin').

From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Poured a deep, dark, opaque black with an off white head that condensed to a thin film. Smells of nuts, roasted malts, and a little metallic. Flavor is watery and all nuts and roasted malts with not a whole lot else. Coffee like finish. Standard dry stout, won’t surprise you.

(Cask at GBBF, London, 9 Aug 2007) Dark copper colour with brief head. Fruity nose with notes of dark fruit, hints of grapefruit and pine needles, malty foundation. Fruity, malty taste with dark and/or dried fruit, oranges, grapefruit, pine needles and a malty, slightly nutty background. Sweetish, solid mouthfeel. Complex but with great balance. Nice beer.

Cask@GBBF2007. Amber colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is hoppy, fruity and slightly wooden. Flavour is the same, but a lot of grassyness has come along. Really dry palate.

Light straw color, super-filtered appearance - light bready aroma, with faint british hops, and some caramel - diacytl dominates the flavor (serious butterscotch, folks), which I guess is this ber trying to be "british," but even the brits know when enough is enough - slight mineral/hard water qualities at least make this not the only thing I taste - long, lingering buttery popcorn taste - man.

Deep amber coloured body with a tint of brown and a very thin off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, nuts, pit fruits and some spices. Medium-bodied; Potent hoppiness up front with a good malt backbone coupled with a light amount of spices. Aftertaste shows a little hops, but nothing special - nor ESB-like. More malt and caramel follows with not much else. Overall, a decent beer - I can’t see what the hoopla is about, it isn’t a good ESB at all in my book. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s in Albany, New York on 26-May-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Cloudy amber coloured body with orange tints and a thin white head. Aroma of fresh hops with some caramel malt tucked in. Medium-bodied; Strong english flavoured hops with some malt and toffee thrown in the mix. Aftertaste shows more hops and a lot of cardboard. Overall, a decent bitter - nothing horrible and nothing superb. I sampled this 12 ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 19-May-2007.

12 oz bottle best before October’07. Small head, color is dark dark amber. A clear beer but dark enough to allow only medium visibility. Aroma is good strong maltiness with candied sugar surrounding a slightly coffee-ish biscuit. Some vanilla in there as well. A nice supped up ESB. Taste starts of with a plain ESB biscuit but finishes strong with that candied sugar coffee like biscuit. Aftertaste is slightly roasty. Just a hint of bitterness at the end to round it out. A very nice brew, sipper, returnable and recommended.
