Description
Since 1988, Gritty's missions have been to craft the best beers possible, serve the very best pub food, and to have way too much fun doing both. For more than 30 years, Gritty's has succeeded in all three (especially the third...just sayin').

From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland's Old Port, Gritty's has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine's first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state's second overall brewery, Gritty's is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With three locations - in the heart of Portland's Old Port, on Route 1 in the heart of Freeport, and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River - Gritty's has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.
"There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I'm pretty sure you could count them on one hand," says Stebbins. "I know that does not fit into the 'newest is best' climate that rules Maine's beer business these days, but, let's be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be 'new' these days? Gritty's will always be the first."

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Pitch black coloured body with a super thin tan head. Deep roasty smell, chocolate and coffee also noticeable as well. Medium-bodied; Nice strong malty flavour with some coffee notes. Aftertaste shows bitter and dark characteristics - nice! Overall, a good stout, nice to try. I sampled this twelve ounce botttle purchased at Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 10-March-2007.

A dark amber ale with a thin off white head. A strong caramel aroma with notes of vanilla. In mouth, a rather boring ale, with sweet caramel, light hopping, nutty notes, rather cloying sweetness in final. Bottle from Gonzobeer.

Bottle. Sweet butter toffee and pepper malt aroma. Dark amber color with small head. Buttery toffee malt with an oak/mild hops finish. Long lasting hops aftertaste. This reminded me more of the Irish ales I’ve had.

Pours a deep amber into a shaker. Tan, medium to micro head looks like pancake batter as it quickly recedes. Sharp, sour yellow cake batter aromas (if it looks like batter, and it smells like batter...it better not taste like batter)...Upfront creamy candy corns turns to a lasting bitter hop finish.

Bottle from Porterhouse; Nose of toasty coffee and chocolate; Transparent dark walnut color with a thick, long-lasting tan head; flavor coffee and hop bitterness, which lasts well into the finish. Body a little weak but pretty good for a low alcohol stout!

Brown with off-white head. Anemic aroma of malt. The flavor was a little hop and a little malt with a slight vinegary, short finish. Thin body. If this beer were the only beer in the cooler, besides Bud, et al, I wouldn’t pass it by. An OK session beer.

Overall, a tasty dry stout. Black pour with big tan head. The aroma was filled with roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. The flavor, too, started with roasted malts and revealed flavors of bitter coffee and chocolate. Quite dry. Thin body. Nicely done.

Best before Dec. 06. Pours amber into a shaker. Micro off-white head leaves no lacing as it recedes. Slight muddy sock notes. Flat, frat basement flavors with dry lasting bitter butterscotch finish. Sessionable.

Draught pint at the brewery on 4/14/06 with SuIIy
A smattering of ivory colored bubbles sit precariously atop a deep bronze-mahogany body, with light golden tints, and a touch of chill haze. Large bubbles stick to the sides of the glass.
The aroms smells of earthy British brown malts, juicy, green hops and fruity yeast esters. Cherries, apples, lemons all mix with the hops to provide a rather lively mix in the nose, however weakened it might be by the high amount of water present in Gritty’s beers. Some toasty caramel-like malts and definite British crystal dryness give it a hard edge, as some buttercream and light acid notes mix unceremoniously on the finish. Juicy, minimally bitter hops fight with crusty, earthy, toasty brown malts to produce a fairly true highly-hopped British bitter-pale ale sort of thing.
The flavor shows plenty of yeasty, mineral-like notes, with tanginess from the hops without much bitterness. Some green, juicy flavors as well, from the hops, complement the pale malt sugars, light caramel touches and hints of buttercream on the end. Though it has a crystal malt flavor (woody, papery, simple sugariness) the texture is not overly hard. Fair amount of wateriness, but I found no flaws. Little bit of funk, even, from Fuggles or Norther Brewer hops? Carbonation is low, alcohol not apparent.
